Looks like that big toe is all healed up. Photo: Ryan Miller

While landing an air-reverse during a freesurf session in Portugal last year, Jordy Smith hurt his big toe. Don’t laugh, this is serious. The technical description for his injury was “tibial collateral ligament and plantar plate and a minor bone contusion.” That’s “turf-toe” to you and me. Anyway, it sidelined him for the remainder of 2013, which means that Mr. Smith has enjoyed some extra vacation days leading up to Snapper. SURFING: Are you back in the water now?
JORDY SMITH: I just started surfing again a few weeks ago. I have been doing a lot of rehab, probably more than I’ve ever done in my career, and I’ve been pushing my training really hard. Mentally and physically. In the past couple years my surfing might have been there but maybe the mental game or my fitness might not have been. It was great for me to watch the Pipe contest unfold. It really sparked something inside of me.

How do you train mentally?
Well, I don’t really want to get into too many details on that. But training comes in many different forms. The way Mick or Kelly might train might be totally different from what I do. What works best for me might be exercise training because that will eventually help with your mental game. But it’s all about being able to deal with the pressure when it’s on.

Speaking of pressure: How have the wedding festivities been going? How was the bachelor party?
Yeah, a lot of wedding planning has been going on. A lot of love. We had my bachelor the other day. Damien Fahrenfort organized it and we went up to this wakeboard contest for the day and let loose. I was wearing one of those Borat suits and had all my best friends in from all over the world. It was a day to remember, from what I can remember.

And the wedding itself?
Getting married was everything I thought it would be and more. We did it in Cape Town and it was the greatest experience of my life so far. I’m still freaking out, I can’t believe it.

You’ve got a couple more weeks until Snapper begins. What’s your plan?
I’m going up to Mozambique. There are some waves up there that are great practice for Snapper, minus the 500 people out. [laughs]

Anything in particular that you’ll be focusing on up there?
I’ve been working on a few moves that I didn’t really have down last year; I wasn’t comfortable enough to make them casual. A few airs, but more power turns, larrys. I want to be able to do something and have the judge’s think, “ Wow, we haven’t seen something like that yet.”

If Jordy can get his mental game on the level of Mick and Kelly this could be his year. We’ll see, but he sounds focused and relaxed. We’re still waiting to see the kind of absolute domination he showed on the WQS when he qualified.
