Punching Ghosts: August 9th

Punching Ghosts

Anonymity is sacred to the turbulent world of Internet commenting. It allows a person to voice their malicious thoughts without ever having to deal with any hand-slapping repercussions. Most of the time these voices are rude and raspy, as if whirred through the cigarette-stained vocal chords of the devil himself. Commenters say belittling things from an illegitimate position of authority. They parade around sheltered by their anonymity cloak and they haunt with all their might. They are nothing more than spiteful ghosts. And here, we punch them.

Bobby needs to work on his questions. Before he asks them. Give him some crayons maybe he’ll draw you a picture too. You’re letting him make a fool out of himself but it makes the mag look bad too. I guess the bar has fallen pretty low for surf writing these days.” —Thin on The Bobby Martinez Interviews

Oh, the ballad of a thin man. We are sooo sorry that you didn’t like Bobby’s questions. We promise to make this right. We are going to swoop Dan Rather from CBS and hire him as our staff interviewer. Danny’s hard-hitting style is exactly what the game has been missing. And, if you want, we can send Bobby some crayons and have him draw a caricature of you and Dan Rather hanging out on a boat. It’s the least we could do to thank you for saving surfing.

What a shit vid. Bunch of fkn idiots with a collective iq of 12” —Cyrus Ward on Chris Ward + Matt King + Mason Ho // Cabo San Lucas // 12:03

When I picture Cyrus, I think of a portly, brown-haired man with a permanent scowl. He’s wearing a deep blue jacket with matching trousers that are supported by a utility belt. Every step he takes is filled with arrogance. He’s got Mickey Mouse in a headlock and his hair is a little bit damp because he’s just got done permanently shutting down a water park. His cap — not even made by Brixton — matches his outfit and he wears a badge that touts he’s the sergeant of the fun police. Yeah… Cyrus.

it’s too bad SHES GOT NO ASS. That thing is flat. Get some junk!” —backside on Anastasia Ashley // Twerk City // 1:33

You’re delusional.

Hey Brendan, since your spouting off about comments, what happened to the comments on the “Eddie Rotham and Playboy blog”. Why did they get pulled? We know Eddie got some negative feed back.
Did Eddie, (or the da hui), put a little pressure on you, (Brendan), to pull the comments? Are you trying to protect your next session on the north shore? Your readers want to know.

this is too true! the amount of crap written in the comments section (this included) is ridiculous!

whats the point of shit talking back?? what does this have to do with surfing?? have tou heard of freedom of speech? bb sucks

Dress this up in an clever heading you want…you’re insulting your own readers. Whether you agree/disagree with their word choice is a matter for the office water cooler, not your own publication. One of your readers disliked the Bobby piece, another a video. Lashing back at them – however disagreeable their language is (to you) – makes Surfing seem even more like petulant, defensive, whiny rag we already know it to be.

Grow up. You publish the content – presumably because you like it – we consume and judge it. Also, your demo are SURFERS, so expecting cogent, well-considered critique is a fool’s errand. You guys should pop champagne corks anytime a post-er nails their/they’re/there. Hell, you should pop corks anytime a staff writer nails it.

  • tony (ty) carson-kailua kona big island

Brendan, while what you said about the comment section has a lot of truth, these blogs do give surfers a chance to voice some comments that are sincere, and to voice some valid points and opinions from the surf community. I guess you and the readers have to take the good with the bad and sift through them, and just try and consider the valid comments. That being said- we are still curious what happened to the comments on the “Eddie blog”?, your readers want to know.

  • RT

freedom of speech. people can say what they want. deal

  • G

Solution; eliminate the commentary section. I’m in disbelief that an employee of a media publication would attack it’s own subscriber/reader base. I’ve always been of the contention that all opinions and commentary should be heard and one ever resorts to any form of physical response ( hand slapping included). You really can’t expect everyone to say something of value. That having been said; one should expect more from the paid writer/employee. Social media really has a way of exposing the foolishness in people. And one must realize nobody here has anything to lose (including respect) because they are anonymous. Except for you Brendon.
And while I’m at it: Why won’t you respond to Tony’s question? Since you do respond to the comment section. I have no idea what Tony is talking about but I would like to. That was kinda fun…

  • tony (ty) carson- kailua kona big island

G and Kyle, thank you for some intelligent feed back and making some good points. And what I was reffering to was the “Eddie Rotham and Playboy” blog-(July 21 2013), you can find it in the blog section about 9 blogs down. When it was first posted, Eddie Rotham got quite a bit of negative feed back in the comment section. And lo and behold, a week or so later, all the comments got pulled and disappeared from the comment section. You can check it out, it now says “comments closed”. It should maybe say the truth, “all comments ‘deleted’ and closed”. Come on Brendan, what gives, your readers want to know. Were sure, (by now), you’ve had enough time to come up with a good excuse or explanation. Wait guys, we might want to be a little careful here, maybe our comments are going to disappear also.

  • tony (ty) carson-kailua kona big island

G and Kyle, thank you for your intelligent comments and bringing up some valid points. What I was referring to, was the “Eddie Rotham and Playboy” blog- July 21, 2013. You can find it on this blog section about 9 blogs down. When this blog was posted, Eddie, got some definite negative feed back in the comment section. And lo and behold, about a week later, the comments were pulled and disappeared and a “comments closed” caption placed. Maybe they should have told the truth and said, “all comments ‘deleted’ and closed”. Brendan, come on, (by now), you’ve had enough time to come up with a good explanation or excuse, and like G said, we know you do respond to the comments section. Your readers want to know. Wait a minute guys, we better be a little careful here, maybe our comments will disappear also.

  • Anyone

Tony apparently likes his comments so much, he doubles them…

Brendan, what about free speech rankles you so? It is bad business trashing your audience amigo. Your industry is a parasite on surfing and you should not be surprised that readers discern your corporate compromise and react with the only voice they have, the comments section.

Tony, surf writing (can’t call them journalists when they intentionally avoid stories of controversy) is meant to anesthetize your scrutiny with thinly disguised ad copy. If this site and magazine gave Billabong a pass for staging a fake diagnosis for a Champions death, you can’t expect them to expose Eddie R to a public that does not see Eddie through the mirror of his ego. No one ever said a word about Quiksilver and Volcom… that could have been the industry ‘news’ of the decade, but keen writers like Brendan Buckley won’t approach that story. Just buy their merch, let them run contests at your beach and enjoy advertising their brands on your clothing.

  • fired

Brendan Buckley is doing so much good for you guys! Dude can’t write anything more than a few paragraphs, with terrible content. You’re not witty bro. It reads like poop.

Responding to the stupid comments is worse than writing them in the first place.

  • Wyatt

Stinks of bitterness and insecurity. Believe in what you publish and move on.

P.S. Eddie Rothman is a cross-dressing racist war criminal junkie.

  • yeah guy

jimmicane, chas and brendan are all complete idiots and each in their own unique way. giving these three characters with such low self esteem an open mic on ING was the worst ides ever… or the best idea ever. regardless they’re all terrible at their “jobs”.

  • tony (ty) carson-kailua kona big island

Anyone, (talk about an anonymous name), It seems when I hit ‘submit comments’, some times my comment doesn’t always show up. I then write it again and submit it again, to make sure it posts. Hope that clarifies it. I don’t think surfer or surfing mag fooled anyone with the cover up your referring to. Too many people could read between the lines. We know Volcom is now owned by “PPR”- a french fashion company. “PPR” owns Gucci- who makes high end purses for women- and now they own Volcom. How core is that? But please elaborate on your Quickdollars and Volcom comments- ‘news’ of the decade, I’m not sure what your referring to. And as for Eddie R.,(as you sow, so shall you reap), it still seems Brendan and surfing mag. are trying to protect their next session on the north shore.

  • Anyone

I am everyone and nobody simultaneously Tony.

    The voice of reality.

Corporate stooges submit to their advertisers, screw the audience which is superfluous to their ambition. As in bigger business, the stock value outweighs actual product performance… the fatal flaw to sustainability.

Brendan would never hold his advertisers feet to any flame, he attacks the commenters easily….

Billabong announced the cause of death for Andy Irons and paid the coroner to delay the actual autopsy results for six months. The Billabong diagnosis was out in front of the story and completely false. Why Tony?

Brendan didn’t ask that simple question that I am aware of.

    Now he chastises free thought.

  • tony (ty) carson-kailua kona big island

Hey, I kind of like that, just kind of, ‘everyone and nobody’- hey, I guess someone has to try and speak out for the silent majority. Ya, billabog posted a 560 million loss last year, and its stock has gone from 14 dollars a share, to 61 cents a share. I think that’s kind of equivalent to a junk bond or something. But still, I’m not sure what your referring to with volcom and quickdollars, that could have been the “news of the decade”. Please elaborate. And ever since Brendan started this blog- “Punching Ghosts”- he’s been about as invisible as a ghost. Come on Brendan, come out of hiding behind your (so called) cloak of authority and get real.

  • tony (ty) carson-kailua kona big island

Brendan, by responding to the commenters in your blog in a demeaning manner, it seems “you”, have become the very thing you seem to despise. You say they speak from an illegitimate position of authority. Dude, they are just voicing their “opinions”- “opinions”. Last time I looked outside, it was still a free world. From what position of authority do you speak- and why do you seem to be hiding behind a cloak of false authority?

  • tony (ty) carson-kailua kona big island

Brendan, on your cover blog, you said this a brand new column dismissing the invisible man-with the ‘comments of the weak’. We are now looking forward to your weakly column on a weekly basis. By the way, did you ever find out what happened to the comments that disappeared from the “Eddie Rotham and Playboy” blog? Your readers would still like to know.

  • HAHAHAHA

YOU GUYS MODERATE THE COMMENTS THEN COMPLAIN ABOUT THEM???!!!

SURFING SHOULD GO TRANSWORLD as in shutdown, I get my ads from SURFER!!

  • Anyone

HAHAHAHAHA….. yeah, ads are everywhere and the source is less important each day.

at some point, a magazine must be redefined as a brochure.

and if I’m not mistaken, and I am not, “comment of the weak” was stolen from Post Surf, the blog you corporate stooges suppposedly never read but now plagairze.

One thing Tony… in what way is your world really free?

You have the illusion of freedom, yes, as the illusion of choice similarly fools you.

You “buy” a house, but only lease the land it rests upon…. ?

Surfer and Surfing share the same ownership…. indistinguishable by design, not coincidence. Brochures of the same products. You have the illusion of choice.

  • Thin

This Punching Ghosts thing is even stupider and more poorly executed than Bobby’s interviews.

  • Thin

While we’re at it, I’m pretty sure Dan Rather hasn’t worked for CBS since ’06, and wasn’t an interviewer there, but an anchor.
Perhaps you should have chosen Charlie Rose or Barbara Walters as an example. Or just admit that Bobby sounded like an idiot.

  • Sarah Elizabeth

Love this post. And also, love Kyle’s comment/response. Dead on.

  • It’sOnlyAParkingLotWang…

Punching the Clown more like it as far as the quality of the content of this web column goes. Oi Vay’Ing …

  • tony (ty) carson-kailua kona big island

Brendan, I think Thin might have nailed you on his last comment, maybe he’s a little smarter than you give him credit for. And, come on Brendan, step up to the plate and be a man, and tell us what happened to the comments that disappeared from the “Eddie Rotham and Playboy” blog.

  • Kaipo Gomes

Keep this going every week. More responses to this than most things put up here. As for Brendan going off on the people that help pay his salary, well you have just learned a life lesson. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Well done on pissing off this many people. Fun to read.

  • Anyone

Kaipo Gomes…. classic. Tony wants to know if that name is an alias…. seriously.

He knows a dude in Wilmington Hanapepe who has a similar name.

And please Brendan, show mercy and tell Tony that the server deleted Rothmans comments… make up something so the man can rest.

Eddie R is a study in contradiction. oooopsss did I type that? Now I can’t surf Velzy this winter?

Holy shit, I love Billabong or whoever funds the hui… sincerely, No one.

  • tony (ty) carson-kailua kona big island

Maybe Brendan has learned a lesson, even though he implied this was going to be a weakly- oops- I mean weekly column. Eddie R. and friends are probably laughing all the way to the bank, getting rich off a bunch of clueless Haoles buying da hui t-shirts. Maybe its time for Eddie to get right with God? And lets leave the, da hui -to the- da hui. Come on Brendan, don’t be such a gremmie, man up and take the drop,-what happened to the comments on the “Eddie Rotham and Playboy” blog?

  • tony (ty) carson-kailua kona big island

Brendan, maybe were putting too much heat on ‘you’. Maybe I should re-phrase my question. ‘Dudes at Surfing mag’., one of you man up and take the drop- who and why did you delete the comments on the “Eddie R. and Playboy” blog? Maybe Taylor Paul or Chas Smith can tell us. Your readers want to know.
