triple-crown-predictions

The Vans Triple Crown Starts Today and we’ve got predictions

By Matt Skenazy

It’s like baseball’s World Series, football’s Super Bowl, or horse racing’s, uh…Triple Crown. It’s the Triple Crown. Surfing’s biggest, highest profile schralp-fest of the year, where over 150 surfers from 17 nations will battle it out for all the glory in what we hope is massive North Shore surf.

And for storming the wild north Shore seas, Vans and friends have stepped up the prize money and are offering a $1 million prize purse. That’s right $1 million. The stakes just keep getting higher. Van’s pumped up the prize purse with an extra $50 grand each for the Men’s Triple Crown Winner, the Pipe Master’s winner, and the ASP Men’s World Champ, plus a $25 grand bonus for the Women’s Triple Crown Champ. Recession what?

The top eight on the WQS are pretty snug in their respective qualification slots for next year’s Dream Tour (that’s Daniel Ross, Pat Gudauskas, Andre Jadson, Owen Wright, Adam Melling, Luke Munro, Brett Simpson and Nate Yeomans), but the surfers sitting in spots nine through twenty-two are separated by less than 1,000 points. That means that with two 6 Star Primes left (the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing and the Reef Hawaiian Pro) it’s anybody’s game.

“There are way too many scenarios to even think about doing any,” said Al Hunt, ASP guru extraordinaire. “After Haleiwa we will have a much better idea of who to watch for.”

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing waiting period kicks off on today where heat one is already in the gates, waiting for waves. Makua Rothman, Sean Moody, Derek Ho and Anthony Petruso are paddling out right…now. Watch it live NOW at http://www.triplecrownofsurfing.com.

SURFING Magazine will be on the ground covering all the action in and out of the water, but to get you frothing and your little minds churning we asked a handful of the North Shore heavies what their predictions were for each event and their overall favorite to walk home Triple Crown Champion. Here is what they had to say:

Makua Rothman

“I’m going to win, everyone else watch out!”

Sean Moody

Reef Hawaiian Pro:

“Kekoa Bacalso and Joel Centeio because it’s their home break and I watch them out there on a daily bases. Or Dusty Payne, because he was the best surfer in the event last year.”

O’Neill World Cup of Surfing:

“I would have to say my first pick would be Pancho. We just finished the Xcel pro and he made every one else in the event look like a little boy, including myself. The other two that looked really good in my opinion would be Marcus Hickman and Ian Walsh.

Billabong Pipeline Masters:

“I think Freddy P. will be itching to get his first WCT victory and if El Niño bring us big west swells, like it has been, he has a really good chance. Jamie O and Bruce would be my second and third. There has been two good Pipe swells so far this year and they stole the show both days.”

Triple Crown Champ:

I would say Pancho or Dusty. Its been a few years since its been in a Hawaiians hands and I think it’s time we get it back.

Hank Gaskell

Reef Hawaiian Pro:

“It’s gonna be Bede Durbidge.”

O’Neill World Cup of Surfing:

Pancho Sullivan

Billabong Pipeline Masters:

Jamie O’brien

Triple Crown Champion:

I hope I win, but I’d pick Pancho.

Tom Dosland

Reef Hawaiian Pro:

Dusty Payne

O’Neill World Cup of Surfing:

Makua Rothman

Billabong Pipeline Masters:

Marcus Hickman

Triple Crown Champ—

Makua Rothman

Reef McIntosh

Reef Hawaiian Pro

Kekoa Bacalso

O’Neill World Cup of Surfing:

Marcus Hickman

Billabong Pipeline Masters

Kalani Chapman

Triple Crown Champion:

Mick Fanning. He’s well rounded at all the events, unless Andy comes out of nowhere.

Kai Garcia

Reef Hawaiian Pro:

Andy Irons

O’Neill World Cup of Surfing:

Andy Pancho

Billabong Pipeline Masters

Andy Slater

Triple Crown Champion:

Andy Irons. That was easy.
