Florida is hot. Like, sizzling.
The waves, unfortunately, are not. Especially in the summer. So the fact that the Rip Curl Grom Search lucked into a waist-high windswell for their New Smyrna Beach event is a serious plus.
Because when there are waist-high waves and there are groms, ripping is implied. This event was no exception. Turns were turned, airs were aired, and some little 10-year-old probably got a head dip. Let’s get into the results.
The premier Boys U16 division was won by a relatively unknown shredder named Sutton Kerlin. Sutton was overwhelmed by the victory, claiming that it was the biggest win of his career.
The Girls U16 was a heated battle, but Sophie Falzone stuck a dagger in the hearts of her competitors with a meaty layback in the final minutes. This is her last year in the even, so she was happy tp make it count.
In the Boys U14 final, Costa Rican Malakai Martinez took the victory before placing an impressive thirds place in the U16 division. Talk about making that plane ticket count!
Lastly, The U12 Boys division was swept unanimously by Ryan Huckabee. It was a big day for the little fella.
This year was unique because all four of the victors were first-time Grom Search champions. We will see the top finalists head to California for the Rip Curl Grom Search National Championships in late October.
