RED BULL AIRSHOW ADDS NEW ELEMENT
TO INAUGURAL OAKLEY PRO JUNIOR CONTEST IN DURBAN, ZSA
March 19, 2008
The
inaugural Oakley Pro Junior surf contest, staged at Durban’s New
Pier from March 21-23, has been bolstered by the addition of a Red Bull
sponsored Air Show. The Oakley Pro Junior event has attracted international
entries and carries a Grade 2 ASP International Pro Junior rating with
a US$10, 000 prize purse.
The Oakley Pro Junior and Red Bull Air Show will be the main events of
the 2008 Vodacom Easter Adrenaline festival that takes place between
March 21 to 24, which also showcases daredevil sports such as freestyle
motocross, Jet Ski demos, and motorbike stunts. Last year over 240,000
people flocked to Durban’s beaches for the Vodacom Easter Adrenaline
Festival. This year, with the addition of the Oakley Pro junior and Red
Bull Air Show, numbers are sure to exceed those of last year.
The Red Bull Air Show offers contestants an opportunity to showcase their
aerial maneuvers, as well as provide surfers with another chance to take
home some extra prize money. Twenty-four of the 32 surfers from the Oakley
Pro Junior will take part and will fight it out for a share of the R5,
000 on offer. This is split into two prizes of R2500 each, for the best
overall aerial surfer of the Air Show and the best aerial maneuver of
the final.
It is expected that top seeds from the Oakley Pro Junior will also be
the frontrunners in the Air Show. As such, Red Bull sponsored Rudy Palmboom
will be looking to represent his sponsors in their title event, while
local boys Shawn Dennis (Durban), Klee Strachan (Winkelspruit) and Casey
Grant (Scottburgh) will also be looking to boost their way into the Air
Show’s top spot.
Tristan Werner, Red Bull South Africa’s Sports and Athletes Manager,
said “We are excited about adding value to the Oakley Pro Junior
in the form of an air show.”
With a vested interest in the form of Oakley Pro Junior top seed Rudy
Palmboom, Werner speaks of how “Red Bull is very serious about
supporting junior surfing events in South Africa”. With the global
standard of surfing getting increasingly difficult, it is promising to
see a big brand investing in the future of local surfing. Werner ratifies
this by saying “We want to see the local youngsters pushing their
skills to new levels, with progressive moves to be rewarded by a progressive
brand”.
With some of South Africa’s top junior surfers primed to go as
huge as possible, the Red Bull Air Show promises to be a highlight of
the Oakley Pro Junior and Vodacom Easter Adrenaline weekend.
