I went to the premier of Cancer to Capricorn last Saturday night. The hype built up in my own mind over the previous months was starting to reach top froth levels. The fact that Reef chose SURFING as the partner and sole US magazine to distribute the movie free to subscribers and newsstands was one thing, the fact that a lifelong friend of mine, Russell Brownley edited it was another.

What I saw in the Lido Theater was a top-notch film loaded with everything you want to see when you watch a surf flick. Good vibes, great waves, warm water, and some insane surfing from names you just simply don’t see enough of.

Let’s go through them:

-Nick Rosza: He be the surprise surfer of the movie. Where has this guy been hiding? He’s got all the talent in the world. You will be impressed.

-Finally, you see some recent footage of Tonino Benson who has one of the coolest, most unique styles of surfing in the world. He’s the magician of the flick.

-A solid segment of new Mick Fanning footage tearing apart his home breaks and getting drained on a massive day at Snapper, without a jersey on.

-Smooth style master Ben Bourgeois makes a few appearances and does his thing.

-You see Paul Fisher actually ripping waves instead of his hilarious interviews (yes he does actually surf and surf well).

-Stephen Kohene and Bottle Thompson score the best P-Pass since Dorian and company.

-And it all wraps up with an epic Mentawais boat trip.

All in all, the combo of the next issue of SURFING and this free video makes it the must have magazine of the year.

Oh yeah, and did I mention that Miss Reef is back? Well she is and you’re going to love her.
