December IssueSometimes half the fun about a great surf trip is the lists. The places you’ll go, the breaks you’ll surf, all the items you’ll need. Four bars of surf wax, two pairs of boardshorts, Sun Cure, earplugs, fin key, passport… Lists, in fact, make the world go ‘round. They bring a certain order to the chaos, a comfortable linearity to our lives. Most lists are stories in themselves, minus all the fluff.

A lot of great songs — or, moreover, lyrics — are lists. Lists of our favorite things. It is in this way that Rodgers and Hammerstein and Philly rapper GrandeMarshall are somehow alike. Hammerstein writes, Rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens, and Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles. Meanwhile, GrandeMarshall writes, Champagne drops on her lips, red finger nails with the almond tips, and She like her red roses black, she something good and something bad/ Tattoo on her face she do, gansta pretty — ratchet too.

To each his own.

Listen, the point is, make a list. Of the places you wanna go, breaks you’re gonna surf. Kanduis, Rifles, Green Bush and Lance’s…Turn up GrandeMarshall while you do it; he’s great packing-your-boardbag-music. And then check off as many as you can.

Kurt Vonnegut once said, “History is merely a list of surprises.” So maybe, crumple up that list and just wing it. —Beau Flemister
