SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., April 28, 2010 – Many of the world’s top-ranked surfers will arrive in Southern California next week to compete in the 6.0 Lowers Pro (May 4-8) at famed Lower Trestles in San Clemente, Calif. The high stakes Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event has drawn 36 elite World Tour surfers looking for lucrative points to maintain their rankings. A major contingent of next-generation athletes will also be on tap to challenge the world’s best both in the 6.0 Lowers Pro and associated Oakley Pro Junior.
The 6.0 Lowers Pro debuted as the first PRIME contest in North America last year. The relatively new PRIME designation, the highest possible ASP rating, is limited to only a few superior competition venues around the world and makes each event worth more points. These points are particularly attractive to competitors from the ASP World Tour who are trying to re-qualify for next year’s Dream Tour.
Stand out top ASP World Tour surfers entering the 128-man field of the $145,000 6.0 Lowers Pro include current top 10: #3 Jordy Smith (ZAF), #6 Adriano De Souza (BRA), #9 Dane Reynolds (Ventura, CA) and #10 Adrian Buchan (AUS), not to mention defending 6.0 Lowers Pro Champion Fredrick Patacchia (Oahu, HI), also currently #10.
Current ASP World #12 Kai Otton (AUS), as well as, Chris Davidson (AUS), Tiago Pires (PRT), Andy Irons (Kauai, HI), Daniel Ross (AUS) and Jadson Andre (BRA), all currently tied for #13 are also in the mix.
Four Southern California World Tour rookies including three San Clemente locals will also come home for the event: Patrick Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), his younger brother Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, CA) and Huntington Beach’s Brett Simpson. Yeomans made the Semifinals last year and Tanner Gudauskas made the Quarterfinals.
Other World Tour performers to watch include veterans CJ and Damien Hogbood (Melbourne, FL) and Taylor Knox (Carlsbad, CA), Tahiti’s Michel Bourez (PYF) and World Tour rookies Dusty Payne (Wahiawa, HI), who made the Quarterfinals last year, and Owen Wright (AUS).
Darrell Goodrum (Leucadia, CA) and Blake Jones (Melbourne, FL) earned ASP wildcards while local Kolohe Andino (San Clemente, CA), Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Julian Wilson (AUS) secured the coveted Nike 6.0 wildcards.
The event’s big points are also important to surfers from the intensely competitive WQS tour who are fighting to finish the year ranked high enough to earn a spot on the World Tour. Watch for current World Junior Champion Maxime Huscenot (REU), former World Junior Champion Kai Barger (Haiku, HI), former World Champion Sunny Garcia (Oahu, HI) as well as a handful of U.S. surfers who made it into the international mix: Corey Lopez (Indian Rocks Beach, FL), Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), Kieran Horn (Santa Cruz, CA) and Brad Ettinger (Huntington Beach, CA).
Running concurrently, the Oakley Pro Junior will see 32 men (20 years and younger) battling for crucial ASP regional ratings points to qualify for the World Junior Tour events.
Both the 6.0 Lowers Pro and Oakley Pro Junior will feature a high-quality webcast with live video coverage and scoring for all five days of competition. For more information about the 6.0 Lowers Pro, visit nike6lowerspro.com. For more about the Oakley Pro Junior, visit oakleyprojunior.com.
