PERFECT PB

All 8 Amateur divisions competed only on Saturday in solid 6 foot storm surf. The early morning started out really rough with pouring rain and super cold, heavy south winds completely blowing out the surf. However, around 11:00am conditions changed for the better with the rain stopping and the sun coming out. The winds calmed down, the surf cleaned up a little and it ended up being a beautiful day with powerful, consistent peaks providing the competitors with very contestable conditions – within no time the famous PB boardwalk was packed with tons of spectators. There was a lot of water moving around out there all day long, so even the most experienced competitors got quite a heavy workout. Congratulations to almost {{{100}}} contestants who came out and persevered through the stormy conditions!

Now on to SUPERBOWL SUNDAY, February 1st!! The stage was set the very next morning for the PRO/AM division and the CORONADO BREWING COMPANY AIRSHOW to do battle……..and what a difference a day makes! We arrive at PB Drive to discover some of the best waves anyone’s ever seen out there! The weather is perfectly clear and sunny with light offshores blowing, and the surf in pretty much all time. 4 foot clean, glassy, hollow, rippable peaks are everywhere you look! We had a great turnout for the event with the PRO/AM starting in the round of 48 and the AIRSHOW with a round of 24. The talented field of competitors were psyching to get out there and blow it up…….and sweet Bejesus did they ever! The waves were so good and the guys were just killin’ it! An average score was running about a 6.5-7.0. Definitely an exciting event to watch as both the PRO/AM and AIRSHOW competitors were lighting it up all day long. The conditions held, the beach and boardwalk were packed with people, and our schedule was designed to have everyone home in time for the SUPERBOWL!

Semi-Finals action in the CORONADO BREWING COMPANY AIRSHOW left Huntington Beach ripper Brandon Tipton and Oceanside’s resident booster, Justin “Baby-Bird” Quirk, just short of the Finals – each placing a very respectable = 5th. Blasting into the AIRSHOW Finals were San Diego’s Airshow veteran Eric McHenry, Vince Alessi from Oceanside, Josh Buran from Carlsbad, and another seasoned veteran, Gavin Sutherland from Hawaii. All these guys were pushing the limits but it came down to the two vets going head to head with Gavin eventually punting past Eric into 1st Place and a getting a check for $500! Eric picked up $350 for 2nd, Vince $250 for 3rd and Josh scored $100 for 4th. Congrats to all these guys and a BIG THANKS to the CORONADO BREWING COMPANY for sponsoring the AIRSHOW and making it all happen.

Now on to the SUN DIEGO/EZEKIEL PRO-AM division……All these heats were really stacked!! Everyone was really turning it up a couple notches for this Event as the waves were just absolute fun-land and it seemed like these guys could do whatever they wanted on these waves. Guys were getting barreled left and right, and in the case of Oceanside’s Chris Abad in Round 1, even getting 2 tuberides on one wave and then finishing it with a huge fins out the back snap for a perfect 10!! 7.0 – 9.0 point rides were commonplace for the PROS as the level of surfing was goin’ thru the roof. Semi-Finals action was unbelievable but coming up just short of the Big Money round was the PRO-AM winner of Event #2 at D-Street, Kyle “K-PAX” Knox from {{{Imperial}}} Beach. Joining K-Pax in the =5th Place spot was the ever consistent, smooth and stylish Jeff Hurley from Newport Beach. Both Jeff and Kyle were ripping all day and received $100 for their 5th Place finish. Advancing into the Finals were Carlsbad’s Justin Wiegand, Darrell Goodrum from Leucadia, Sean Marceron from Encinitas and the PRO-AM winner of Event #1 in Ocean Beach, Che Stang from Carlsbad. With $1,000 on the line for 1st Place these guys were really goin’ at it. The 20 minute Final was super competitive with everyone exchanging high scoring rides. There was no shortage of waves as the surf stayed consistent all day long with the 4 Finalists all determined to win the big 1st Place check. After tallying each guy’s top 3 rides it was Che Stang who clinched his second $1,000 check of the young season!! Not bad for a days work, huh Che? 2nd Place and a check for ${{{600}}} went to Darrell Goodrum, 3rd Place and winning a check for $400 was Sean Marceron, and grabbing a cool ${{{300}}} for 4th Place was Justin Wiegand. Congrats to all the PRO-AM Finalists for making it all the way through the round of 48 and getting into that stacked Final!! Big Thanks to SUN DIEGO BOARDSHOPS and EZEKIEL CLOTHING for sponsoring the Surf Series and blowin’ this thing up huge!!!!
