NSSA NATIONALS: THE RESULTS

posted by / News / June 27, 2004

Another year, another list of heroes. The 2004 NSSA Nationals concluded this evening at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott to cheers and jeers from a banquet room full of comp-weary competitors. It’s all a blur as the names rattle off, but here’s a few things that’ll stand out from this year’s marquis amateur even like a perfect Lowers 10:1.Dane Gudauskas, following his brother Pat’s lead in 2003, once again proved that knowledge is power. The 4-point-something GPAer schooled the home schoolers with a polished, whip-smart backhand that’ll come in handy when he takes on the world in the coming years. Another thing that’ll come in handy? His solid education. As the G-Kids have shown, limited surf time during the school year means unlimited motivation all year.2.Eleven-year-old Carissa Moore made NSSA history with the first ever Nationals trifecta: Open Women’s, {{{Explorer}}} Women’s and Middle School Girls victories. Instead of letting the mountain of trophies go to her head, the tiny Hawaiian phenom immediately deflected the glory. “This trophy shouldn’t go to me,” she said of the Governor’s Cup. “It should go to Bethany Hamilton.”3.After a long drought, the East Coast crew had plenty of reason to celebrate. New Smyrna’s Evan Geiselman took a hotly contested Open Mini Grom final, PR’s Dylan Graves won the heaviest final of the contest, the Explorer Juniors, Gulf Coaster {{{Sterling}}} Spencer soared to victory in the O’Neill Airshow Championships and New Smyrna loc Jeremy Johnston stomped the Explorer Men’s title. “Florida’s the dirrrdiest state,” claimed JJ. “But it’s the best.”And now, all the results we could gather in a flurry of post-ceremony score-checking and re-tabulating. We’ll fill in the missing finals as soon as we find them.
