Full disclosure. I did not attend the Billabong Pro Mundaka today but am
writing a contest report about it anyway. I know I am not the first person
to do this but I believe I’m the first to admit it.  If you watched the
webcast, as I did, from Sopelana this morning, you wouldn’t have wanted to
be there either.  “Brutal,” “miserable” were the words contest director Mike
Parsons used to describe the cold, rainy, howling onshore surf.  I was more
than happy to see it on a computer screen from the warm, cozy confines of my
hotel room in France.   After 8 heats it was mercifully over and the comp
moved 30 minutes east to Mundaka.

That’s when it got interesting. I called Kelly Slater and asked him what he
was up to.  I knew he was in France as trying to rehab a sore knee. I
figured he was going to withdraw from the comp considering that he could
barely walk when I saw him two days ago. “Knee’s feeling a little better
today,” he said.  “Not sure yet what I’m going to do.”

A few hours later I flipped on the webcast to watch the start of Round 2 at
Mundaka. I hadn’t heard from Kelly and wasn’t sure what he’d decided.
During the Dane Reynolds/Kekoa Bacalso heat the phone rang. It was Kelly.
“Going to drive to Spain, you want to come along?”

Normally this would be a no brainer. Of course I would. But this time was
different.  This time I’ve been hanging out for two and a half weeks in a
place that, this time of year, normally has some of the best and most
consistent surf in the world. But this trip, at two weeks in I had not seen
any waves over waist high.  It’s killing me. It’s killing everyone here.  To
add insult to injury, today it was finally 6 foot but was so stormy it was
nearly un-rideable.

Tomorrow, though, my last day in Europe, it’s supposed to be offshore.  The
best day in a month.  SoŠmy choice. Go with Kelly to Spain and watch
surfing, stay that night and watch the final day tomorrow? Or stay in France
and surf?

I stayed.

The webcast got better.  Mundaka looked head high and chunky, but fun. CJ
Hobgood and Bobby Martinez both landed huge airs and were ripping.  Parko,
who’s clearly dealing with a nagging injury, collected his third 17th in a
row and went down to Drew Courtney while Mick Fanning smoked David Weare and
took the ratings lead for the first time in two years.

And Kelly? He did a two and a half hour drive through holiday weekend
traffic in ninety minutes.  Then he paddled straight out and, after a
tentative start, posted the highest heat score of the contest against Jihad
Khodr, who surprisingly put up a good fight.

Tomorrow the comp will likely finish at Mundaka on the evening low tide.
After a surf or three in France I will make my way there and I will write a
report based on things that I actually see in person.

I promise.
