2009 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Day 2

Conditions: 2-3 feet, lazy but fun
Events Held: Women’s Round 1
Nature’s Call: In parts of the Great Lakes region, waves like this quite welcome
Prediction: Contest will happen to run on the weekend

The forecast isn’t great for the next couple days – officials are throwing around some low numbers, and there won’t be too many faces at Bells. But on the weekend, Easter weekend, we’re prepared for a massive swell…of the crowd, that is. Plenty of vacationers; Easter is a huge deal here, not just rodents and candy like in the States. And what about the surf forecast? Pffft, first thing’s first: festival attendance, ticket sales!

Hopefully for us (and them) the waves and the people will both show up and make for one of those historic, memorable Rip Curl Pros we always hear about. Today didn’t have many waves or people. It was good enough to get the women’s Round 1 heats out of the way, though, which means they only need one more day to crown a champion; the men need just two days. The girls are still on their same old format, so they hit the water three at a time this morning in clean, crumbly walls that you’d associate with a really good wave pool, or a pretty weak pointbreak. Interesting contrast between the high-stakes bloodbath of men’s action yesterday and the whatever, double-elimination heats today. Chelsea Hedges was impressive on her backside, digging out bottom turns against the grain, but it was so slopey. The waves didn’t really want to be surfed vertically, and though the girls came to play, Round 1 was more about going through the motions. The next few days will likely see lineups packed with visitors and practicing pros, but otherwise not much happening on the Bells Bowl.
