60 Seconds With Rob Machado

posted by / News / September 17, 2008

Coming up on the 29th of September is the 7th annual Rob Machado Experience golf tournament. It’s a golf tournament without the ‘golf’ part. The event allows average Joe’s and Josephine’s to hit the greens with none other than Rob ‘Jimi’ Machado and some other super-duper top-secret celebrities. All funds raised go to charities that help teach the next generation about sustainability and changing things for the better. SURFING caught up with Rob recently to get the low down on his event and check the progress of his soon to be released, second bio-film by Taylor Steele: Drifter.

SURFING MAGAZINE: HOW DID THE ROB MACHADO EXPERIENCE GOLF TOURNAMENT COME TO BE?

Rob Machado: I was playing a lot of golf back when we first started the Rob Machado Experience. I played in a lot of golf tournaments; there was the Waterman’s Classic back then and a couple others. They’re fun, but I wanted to do my own tournament that was a little different, try to mix it up a bit, make it a bit more exciting, make it so it’s not just about golf and who the best golfer is. That’s why it’s called “The Experience”. We try to throw some curve balls at people and get those who don’t normally play golf to go out and have fun and not worry about being a ‘golfer’.

THE THEME THIS YEAR IS ‘ROCKSTAR’, YOU’VE GOTTA BE THE JIMI HENDRIX OF THE EVENT DON’T YOU?

Yeeeah, I’m just gonna have a couple of acid tabs under my head band and just be tsssseeeooow (noise of a bottle rocket taking off). Ha ha, so yeah it’ll be fun. It’s kinda a dead give away that I’m gonna be Hendrix huh? The mandatory Hendrix. It should be fun, we always make it a good time, and it’s not too serious. A lot of the times I just tear up the scorecards and hand out the prizes to whoever looks cool.

SO YOU’VE GOT FINAL SAY ON THE AWARDING OF PRIZES THEN?

Totally, I’ll give the guys who win the tournament something really stupid, then for the good prizes I’ll just pick names out of a hat and pick random people.

WHAT CHARITIES WILL BE BENEFITING FROM THE ROB MACHADO EXPERIENCE THIS YEAR?

My non-profit is the Rob Machado Foundation and I’ve partnered up with the Cardiff Education Foundation. We help fund all these various programs such as the Lunch Recycling Program where we make all the trays and lunch products at schools recyclable and make sure there are recycling bins in the student’s lunch area. This year we’re starting an organic garden so the kids can plant and grow their own organic produce. We also did a water bottle program, which allows the kids to buy their own refillable metal bottles at a cheap price so they can refill them instead of buying bottled water. It’s really about educating the kids about the simple things you can do on a daily basis that make such a big difference. It’s cool to see all these things come to fruition and actually happen, I get sent the photos of all the kids with their water bottles. It’s pretty neat.

WHICH CELEBRITIES HAVE CONFIRMED FOR THIS YEAR’S EVENT?

At this point, I can’t really say. Some things have gotta remain a surprise, Tiger Woods showed up a couple of years ago. We’re serious dude, we don’t mess around.

WHAT ABOUT THE NOVELTY EVENTS THIS YEAR? OR DO YOU HAVE TO KEEP YOUR LIPS TIGHT ABOUT THAT TOO?

Well, you can always expect something weird. We try to incorporate any and every sport we can imagine, from baseball to tennis to whatever it takes really. I think we had {{{LaCrosse}}} in there one year, That was cool. We’ve had hockey, it’s just whatever fun things we can find.

SO FOR THE ROCK-STAR THEME ARE YOU GONNA HAVE EVERYONE TEE OFF WITH A DRUMSTICK OR A FENDER STRAT OR SOMETHING?

Hey, you never know, it could get weird…

IN OTHER THINGS MACHADO, HOW’S YOUR NEW MOVIE (DRIFTER) COMING ALONG?

The new movie is… to tell you the truth, I don’t know. We stopped filming over a week ago and they (Taylor Steele & co.) just dove into the editing as soon as I left Bali. I’ve been a little bit removed because as soon as I got back I was straight into the Boost Mobile Pro and ASR. But I was up until about 3 a.m. last night doing voiceovers. Taylor’s coming here with a rough edit for us both to sit down and look at and go through with a fine-toothed comb. But he said it’s good, last time I talked to him he seemed to be pretty stoked so that’s a good sign.

SO YOU’VE GOT A FEW LATE NIGHT EDITING SESSIONS ON THE COFFEE COMING UP?

Well I don’t drink coffee…but it’s kinda cool you know? When you stay up that late you cross into this different realm of creativeness. I’ve noticed it with music too. Once you get past the crashing stage when you feel like going to sleep, you get this second wind and you go into this altered state of mind, like you wouldn’t even need drugs. Did I say that out loud?

FINALLY ROB, WHAT’S YOUR HANDICAP THESE DAYS?

I couldn’t even tell you. I haven’t even looked at my handicap for a good two years. I used to be down in the single digits but I’d be lucky to shoot that these days.

ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE TEEING OFF WITH A HOCKEY STICK…

Yeah, in my golf tournament it doesn’t matter, handicaps don’t matter. Actually the really good golfers will probably do worst, so that’s what makes it fun. It’s good.

The Rob Machado Experience will be held at the Lomas {{{Santa Fe}}} Country Club on Monday the 29th of September. For more info: www.RobMachado.com
