Wall space is getting precious for the prolific Barney.

I first met Shawn Barron in France about 11 years ago, and to this day have yet to meet a bigger-hearted, more classic individual than Barney. During that trip we hit it off and have been good friends ever since. I can honestly say I’ve never heard him raise his voice, snap on anyone, or even look upset. He always has a big smile on his face and some funny questions about your girlfriends. Barney has accomplished so much in his life, from magazine covers to conquering Mavericks to working with kids stricken with Cystic Fibrosis. He’s a true legend. —Tom Carey

TOM CAREY: Yo Barney! Great to see you the other day. Thought it would be good to let people know what you’re up to, and that you still rip. So let’s do this questionnaire. How many years young are you now?

Shawn “Barney” Barron: Old man Barney turned 40 last November 11th.

Can you still do airs?

I still go for air sometimes, they’re definitely getting harder than they used to be for me. I rarely pull one. All you air guys, your airs are numbered, so go big while you can.

How’s the art coming along?

For me, inspiration to do art comes in waves. I did a couple new pieces, which I’m stoked on. A Mohawk dude and some color waves.

Tell us about your art studio.

I have an art studio at my house, which is super nice for me because I can make a mess and leave it there for days. It actually used to be my old room in high school, the garage.

Who’s your roommate and what do you call him?

I have two roommates. Lauren, I call her Laurennator. She’s studying to become an acupuncturist. And Daniel Shea, nicknamed Traniel, a recent UCSC graduate. He’s a backsider that rips. He can do some amazing aerials.

Who is Foxey?

Foxey’s the best girl dog in the world. I’ve had her for 11 years, which makes her the longest relationship I have ever had. Nicknamed her Stinky.

Would you ever do the Cali Rally again?

The Cali Rally was the funniest, hardest thing I have done. It’s been a couple years, so I would do it again, especially if we had the same crew. We did so much in two weeks it boggles the mind: BMX racing to doughnut barfing, panty raids and French kissing grandmas. That doesn’t even scratch the surface of one of the things we did.

You have any good pickup lines?

“Nice legs, what time are they open?” Too much to the point? Or, “Did it hurt? When you fell from heaven?”

Anything you want to get off your chest?

Not traveling as much these days so to all those worldwide friends I have…Hi, hello, hope to see you some day. Surfing is lifelong living.

Barno, the legend, ya good to see a bigger guy surfing well. Maybe we should start a mag with people over 6-0 and over 200 lbs. These little pencil necks with their lame tail ficks and airs they never pull just ain’t doing it. So peel all those lame stickers off your board and surf like a man!
