Chippa Wilson. You might want to get used to this name. In fact, let’s say it again: Chippa Wilson. Rolls off the tongue nicely, huh? Chippa…The humble 21 year old Gold Coast secret released this video short to Stab Magazine and Billabong’s talent search project entitled “Little Weeds.” www.StabMag.com/LittleWeeds — where surfers, filmmakers, models, writers and photographers are getting the opportunity to tryout for the big time — and we haven’t been able to stop watching it. We called the small town day laborer with a wickedly consistent rodeo up to find out how a talent from the Gold Coast can remain so underground for so long.
SURFING MAGAZINE: SO WHO ARE YOU AND WHERE DID YOU COME FROM?
CHIPPA WILSON: My name is Chippa Wilson and I’m from Gold Coast Australia — just between the borders of NSW and Queensland.
HOW OLD ARE YOU, CHIPPA?
I’m 21 years old.
HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO KEEP SUCH A LOW PROFILE FOR SO LONG COMING FROM THE GOLD COAST?
What it is man, is there’s town called Coolangatta — you’ve all heard of that I assume — and well I live about 15 minutes away from there towards Sydney. It’s a lot quieter and there are good waves here. I’ve just never really gotten the froth to go up and surf with hundreds of people at the Superbank. So I just stick around my little coastal town really.
SO YOU WORK A NORMAL JOB?
Yeah, I was working a fair bit the past few years. My old man is a carpenter and I was doing a bit of work for him — a bit of tree lopping as well.
HAVE YOU BEEN A SPONSORED SURFER BEFORE?
I’ve been sponsored off and on for a while. I rode for Cult a while back but they went under. But I’ve been working with Analog the past six months and that’s been really good.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS HELPED YOU GAIN THE EXPOSURE THE PAST FEW MONTHS?
I think it was the “Little Weeds” program that Stab Magazine’s doing. All my mates were doing it and I didn’t quite get into it for a while, but I saw how many people were into it so I put this little profile vid from the past few months together and just threw it out there and it got around quickly.
WHAT SURFERS ARE YOU WATCHING AND SURFING WITH?
I usually surf just with my home mates and whoever is in the water. I really like watching Dion Agius, Julian Wilson, Jordy Smith, Craig Anderson and Dusty Payne.
The MODERN COLLECTIVE TYPE GUYS?
Yeah for sure. Those innovative guys.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
I’ve got a trip in August to Bali, but in between that I’ll just keep my ears open for opportunities and just be working my ass off surfing.
HAVE YOU BEEN TO CALIFORNIA?
No, I’m frothing to. I was talking to Benji Weatherley and he’s running a grom contest in California and he said that would be a good time for me to come over so I’m frothing on that.
