Hun, that's Dane Reynolds — you might want to give him the time of day.

Maxime Huscenot had the displeasure of being in a heat against Dane Reynolds and Mick Fanning, but he sure did go down swinging.

It started to feel like the Triple Crown. After two days of competition between highly-ranked Prime surfers, the Round of 64 introduced the ‘CTers to the party. But instead of rolling out a royal blue carpet for the stars, the sea went silent. Small, inconsistent surf was the story of the day and the results matched the patchy nature of the swell. John John lost to Dale Staples and Matt Banting — we told you that Matt would be worthy of the tour someday. Dane Reynolds beat Mick Fanning and that’s worthy of a mention. It’s hard not to like the newly fit and focused Dane. Unfortunately, Conner Coffin happened to be in the same heat as Dane and Mick and that never ends well. And so Conner’s hopes for 2014 ‘CT qualification took a blow. Meanwhile, Dion Atkinson, Jadson Andre and Mitch Coleborn advanced and kept the dream alive. We’re now down to 32 surfers at Haleiwa, but the swell forecast looks about as promising as a 4th of July party in North Korea. Still, you never do know what might cometh from that Hawaiian sea. —Brendan Buckley
