What started as a disastrous day two for the USA with three straight Under 18 losses by Trevor Saunders, Cody Thompson and Micheal Dunphy with their fourth place finishes in their Round two winners heats which relegated them to the Repercharge/Losers rounds was turned around by an inspiring performance by USA Surf Team captain Cory Arrambide.

Cory dominated his heat with one of the days highest scoring rides when he completed an aerial 360 perfectly landed into another maneuver to finish his heat winning ride.

It re-established momentum when in the next three Under 16 heats USA’s Evan Thompson, Even Geiselman and Dane Zaun earned hard fought seconds in the process knocking some Brasilero’s and an Hawaiian into the Repercharge/Losers rounds, before Kolohe Andino ran into Aussie Garrett Parkes and Hawaii’s Dylan Goodale to be pushed into third and the Repercharge/Losers rounds.

The Under 16′s performance was a positive sign as in the last two Quiksilver ISA Junior World Championships it has been the division that has let the US down in the team medal quest for Gold.

Meanwhile the Aussies are perfect with no team-members yet relegated to the Repercharge/Loser heats and are perfectly positioned to defend their Gold medal winning performance of a year ago in Brasil.

On podium two where first round girls competition was staged the USA got off to good start with a win from Courtney Conlogue who finished fifth a year ago in this event in Brasil whilst the the other three USA girls took seconds again to that New Zealand team that in round one competition seemed to have the USA’s number.

With six days left yet of competition, it’s long way yet from the final standings being determined but for the USA, the future performances of Saunders, Cody Thompson, Dunphy and Andino is critical to our success, for them it is either show up and blow up or go home!

The Coach!
