Jack Robinson And Jamie O’Brien Got Into The Pipe Masters

Trials by fire

There are one hundred and three reasons why the entire surf world — along with the guns, their groupies and everything in between — flock to the North Shore every single year. The Billabong Pipeline Masters is probably the primary one.

But before Pipe, there must be trials.

I just walked into the Billabong house and two couches are being shared by the entire Moniz family. Every one of their eyes is glued to the action. I can see fifteen-foot Pipe out the window, and in front of me a TV flashes with the webcast stream of the Finals. Seventeen-year-old Jack Robinson pulls into a 9.something barrel — the viewing offered to the house in both pixel and flesh. Robinson gets spit out. The entire house erupts.

Mason Ho, Jamie O’Brien, and Kekoa Cazimero now need big scores and have little time. Not coincidentally, they don’t find ’em. The heat comes to an end and Robinson gets carried up the beach.

The kid is starting to make a big mark on this North Shore. He and Jamie O’Brien will surf in Pipe Masters, most likely running tomorrow. Let’s hope the Moniz family sits back in their lucky places on the couch. —Jacob Coppes
