Ian Walsh and friends find some fun 50-foot peaks in Maui

This morning was an active one. But the first thing to catch me by surprise — aside from Tom Carroll breaking his leg at Waimea and the waves breaking miles out to sea and the sea of foam just off our balcony and the genral chaos that surrounds a swell event like this on the North Shore was a text from SURFING photographer Jeff Flindt. Apparently while I was sleeping on our couch with a towel for a blanket, he joined a crew of committed hell men over to Jaws for first light. This is the text I awoke to:

Jeff Flindt: I’m in maui. Clean and big. Seen 50-footer already. Light konas, 7 skis outside with more coming. Walsh, laird, Rasta, LaurieTowner, Luke Egan, Mike Parsons and more already in lineup. 2 helis and one boat.

SURFING Magazine: How’d you make it?

Jeff Flindt: No time to talk.

Surfing Magazine:
K. Don’t die please.

So the Eddie is 90 percent for the morning. This swell is relentless, turning the entire North Shore into a ski slope of foam. As stories, photos and updates come in check here. We’re deep. And our house has yet to float away. It’s close though. We have so much to tell you. The Hawaii issue is going to blow you away.
