More Fresh Ink for Jordy Smith

posted by / News / December 27, 2007

There’s a little less precious real estate left on Jordy Smith’s 6’3” shred sticks these days. DVS shoes have inked the South African phenomenon and are looking forward to big things from him this year on the ASP World Tour. After winning the 2007 WQS, Jordy has his eyes fixated on World Tour greatness. We caught up with him just before he boarded the plane bound for his home in South Africa after a 2-month tour of duty in Hawaii to find out about his new gig with DVS.

SURFING MAGAZINE: So Jordy, you had a pretty amazing 2007, what kind of celebration do you have planned for New Years?

JORDY SMITH: Nothing planned for New Years yet actually. I’m getting on a plane pretty quick and going home. I’m still on the North Shore and it’s definitely time to go. I’m really excited see my family.

HOW LONG YOU BEEN OVER THERE?

Oh, I’ve been here for two months now. So I’m definitely ready to be home for a bit.

DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS FOR 2008?

Actually, I do. The main thing I want to do next year is eat right. I need to stop eating the “maccas” and all the junk food. Just need to get on a program now and start taking things more seriously. That’s the main thing I want to work in this year.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW DEAL WITH DVS.

Well, they showed some interest in sponsoring me and then approached me about it. I had a good bonding with them so I decided to go their way. One of the reasons I chose them is the people. There are great guys that work at the company, and where there are great guys at a company, there’s going to be a great company. Good people make a good brand.

WHAT SHOES YOU ROCKING NOW?

Well, right now I’m in some of their skate shoes, but I’ll be coming out with a signature flop pretty soon and we’ll go from there after that.

DID YOU HAVE ANY MEMORABLE WAVES THIS YEAR IN HAWAII?

Yeah, I had one memorable one at Backdoor. Early season and it was a rainy day so there was nobody on the beach, but for personal use it was a good one. Definitely needed that one to get through the rest of the season.

HOW WAS CHRISTMAS OVER THERE?

Oh pretty mellow, my dad and our friend Chris just hung out. No presents. Mom says she has a couple presents for me at home though, so I can’t wait to get there.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THESE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS OFF?

I’m going home to do a lot of training. I want to get fit for the World Tour. I’ve got a month and a half at home so I can’t wait for that. Then it’s off to the first event. It’s going to be so much fun.

WHO YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO TAKING DOWN NEXT YEAR?

Not really anyone in particular. I think were just lucky to get to surf some of the best spots in the world with only one other guy out.

WHAT WAVE ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST?

I would definitely say Chopes. There’s so much hype around it.

NOW, YOU’RE A SINGLE GUY, WHAT EVENT DO YOU RECKON WILL HAVE THE HOTTEST GIRLS ON TOUR?

Well, I’d say its generally America––so the Lowers event. But the Gold Coast definitely has a lot of girls, too.

YOU GOING TO BRING YOUR BATMAN COSTUME TO ANY EVENTS? (JORDY MADE SEVERAL PARTY APPEARANCES WITH AN INCREDIBLE BATMAN COSTUME ON THE NORTH SHORE THIS YEAR)

I just might have to bust it out.

WHERE DID YOU COME UP ON THAT THING?

I saw it in the store and was so stoked to buy it. I got a bit weird with it this year. I may have to bring it on tour with me (Laughs).

(Make sure you check out the March issue of SURFING Magazine for an in-depth roundtable interview feautring Jordy, as well as Ben Bourgoeis, Dane Reynolds, Tiago Pires and Jay Thompson).
