Dan Ross kinda had Kelly on the ropes, white wetsuit and all. But unless you’re very new to surfing, or an Australian, your money was always on Kelly. Sure, we would have loved for him to clinch his 11th in more dramatic fashion, and with surfing that differed from the surfing that won him his first one, but we can’t always have the drama like there was in New York, when he threw his Hail Mary against Taj. Or watch him toy with Teahupo’o barrels like he did against Owen. Sometimes it comes down to doing what you need to do to win the heat. To win the contest. To win the World Title.

It’s what Kelly’s always done, and in that regard, it was an appropriate way to win his 11th, and perhaps his final World Title.

Yes, we’ve heard it before. “Retiring” for Kelly lasts till he wins Snapper. He’s the Brett Favre of surfing. He has that can’t stop won’t stop never get enough personality that carried him to where he is now. But according to many that are close to Kelly, he’ll be MIA next year but for Quik events and Pipe.

And if he’s really gone, like gone-forever gone, then we’ll tip our hats to a man who gracefully bowed out on top. But if he returns, well, look for a similar post this time next year.

Congrats Ke11y.

Had the joy of being there today, just in time to see Kelly’s heat. The waves suddenly were as good as it gets in SF. Solid overhead peaks with long walls and semi-transparent lips. Very rare. Crazy rare. Looked like Hossegar, or even a little like Back-door Pipe at times. Just beautiful. And it is fitting that he won this one in NorCal, because surfing here is a very different beast from all the other contest sites. Sufing up here requires a deep, core commitment. We’re hard-core. There’s no babes on the beach, or picnics, or much sun-bathing going on. It’s usually cold air, and colder water, which means more density to the wave and more power… And that means hard paddle-outs and long hold-downs. You have to really want it to be in it here… And so as a group, I can say that we are the last frontier for Kelly’s reign. We were the last place he needed to conquer, and he did. The guys and girls in the wilderness here equally respect and admire Kelly’s abilities, and sensibilities. We care about the environment, and we know Kelly does. We respect other races and cultures, and we know Kelly does. We respect power surfing, and huge punts, and we know Kelly does. And we agree with Kelly’s comment today that Andy Irons must have been watching over the event today, because the surf was a gift from Heaven. A day for the history books in every way imaginable.

    retire after 20(ke)11(y) campaign?
    for sure.
but, unless he gets # 50 at Pipe, you’ll see him grab a wild card ( or two ) in 2012.
no way he’s not finishing off his illustrious career without putting that number on his competative ledger.

ps @ “Ing” – i would not put kelly slater in the same sentence with brett farve, let alone paragraph, for a multitude of reasons. and kelly has been a tremendous ambassador for pro surfing, farve not so much with pro footbal…

Hailing originally from The East Coast, of course I always brag about Lisa Andersen and Kelly Slater (SL8R), who are also originally from The East Coast.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to photograph SL8R up-close many times. Heck, I have ExGirlfriends who only remain on my Facebook, just to see new photographs which I post of SL8R.

2011 has been another Great Year for Him, and I as I told Folks during the “Kelly Slater’s Huntington Beach Key – To – The – City Event;” “…without – a – doubt, He has been THE Greatest Ambassador For Professional Surfing – EVER….”

Please let it be over! I’m ready to surf that wave pool and see Black & White 2. We know he can win titles…does he really need to keep proving that?
