Follow the Light Dinner in Flame’s name to be held tonight at the Surfing Heritage Foundation

On October 10, 2005, SURFING’s legendary photo editor of more than 30 years, Larry “Flame” Moore, passed away after a long, three-year battle with a brain tumor. Flame never gave up the fight ’til the very end, telling his friends and co-workers at the magazine to “keep ’em sharp and keep ’em bright.”

During his career, Flame was instrumental in helping young photographers advance their craft. From Dan Merkel to Aaron Chang to Jeff Hornbaker to Aaron Loyd to Chris {{{Van}}} Lennep to Hank to Pete Frieden to Jeff Flindt to Pete Taras to Pat Stacy to Sam Olson….they all have Flame to thank for helping them become the photographers they are today.

Flame remains a guiding light of SURFING Magazine, and will stay on our masthead for eternity.

Today, if you happen to paddle out, make sure you lay down a good turn or fly a big air. As long as the lighting’s good, we’re sure Flame is up there, capturing it at 1/640th@f5.6. – The SURFING Staff

NOTE: The Follow the Light Foundation, a photo grant set up in Flame’s name, will be holding its annual dinner and fundraiser tonight at 7 p.m. at the Surfing Heritage Museum. This year’s $5,000 grant recipient will also be announced. For more information, contact Associate Photo Editor Sammy Olson at sam.olson@primedia.com.
