The ${{{100}}},000 Beachley Classic — biggest event on the ASP women’s WCT — is under heavy pressure to survive after its major sponsor has departed.

Havaianas, naming rights backer of defending world champ Layne Beachley’s eponymous event, withdrew its sponsorship following what Havaianas Australian-based marketing manager, Daniela Marich, called an increase in sponsorship costs for the event.

In a statement released to press, Marich said: “While it was fantastic helping to build such a positive event on the women’s surf circuit, unfortunately sponsorship costs were a considerable increase on the year prior and could not be justified in the Havaianas marketing budget.”

The news comes on the eve of the ASP women’s WCT event three, the Billabong Girls Pro at Bahia, Brazil. The Beachley Classic, fifth event on tour, is scheduled for mid-October, at Manly Beach in Sydney, Australia. Defending champion is current equal first on the rankings, Steph Gilmore.

Layne, who’s gained a reputation for making things happen with or without surf industry support, says she’s determined that her event will go ahead no matter what. Last year she made headlines in Sydney by announcing she would borrow against her house in order to secure the contest.

Back then Havaianas were her saviors; this year their withdrawal will leave a gap close to $400,000 in the event budget, according to local newspaper, the Manly Daily. “They saved the event last year when we needed them,” Beachley told the paper. “Now I’m waiting for someone else to save it this year.”

The event is strongly backed by local and regional government and by Beachley’s longtime corporate ally, accountancy firm KPMG.
