“How sick is it looking at all this photography on the big screen?” said Kai Neville in-between slideshows last night at the 5th Annual Follow the Light Foundation Awards, all in honor of long-time SURFING Magazine photo editor and current guiding light Larry “Flame” Moore. The foundation was set up in his name to guide young photographers on their path to becoming professional surf photographers and has been proven to showcase the next crop of talent from around the world. All past winners of the grant have gone on to produce incredible work throughout the surf world and we expect Morgan to keep that tradition alive. In attendance last night were modern and former surf and photo legends including Dino Andino, Rob Machado, Conner Coffin, Aamion Goodwin, Sean Moody, Joel Centeio, Peter Townsend and many more.
After narrowing the field of over 70 entries down to five incredible submissions from Ryan Foley, Billy Watts, Matt Lusk, Morgan Maassen and Corey Wilson (who’s slideshows are below) a winner was announced to the packed house. Morgan Maassen’s fine-art inspired slideshow took the win. “I look at art books all day really,” he said before presenting his slideshow. And it shows. “This is an amazing honor and I promise you I will continue shooting photos for the rest of my life.” Congratulations to all the finalist from SURFING Magazine. We can’t wait to run your shots.

Winner of the $5,000 Grant — as well as the viewer’s choice award (another $500) is Morgan Maassen of Santa Barbara.

Why do the Follow the Light winners always go on to work for a competitor publication? Surfing should get a handle on that back-stabbing situation. Flame would be rolling over…
This event looks all ages. By which I mean, gay.
I like the submissions that show the work at a slow and steady pace. Allows you time to actually focus on the photo and take in it’s interesting aspects. Wilson and Maasen did a killer job.
Maassens work is quality.
Judges made a good call.
