Freak accident leaves the North Shore community in shock

Respected Hawaiian photographer and cinematographer Jon Mozo died yesterday while shooting at Backdoor Pipeline. He was 32. While the details are still a little unclear, Mozo was out in the normal takeoff zone along with SURFING photographer Jeff Flindt and others. It was an average day by Backdoor standards, in the 4- to 6-foot range. According to witnesses, he may have been thrown over the falls and hit his head on the reef. No one noticed until he washed up near the Ehukai Lifeguard tower, where rescue attempts proved futile. This could be the first time a surf photographer died while in the line of duty. Jon was a talented photographer and genuine, easygoing family man, survived by wife Nikki and four children. He will be missed by a huge community of surfers and photographers who had the fortune of knowing him.
