A southern hemi, tropical south mix swell, crisp fall conditions and some of California’s best surfers makes a potent combination. And at the Oakley Newport Beach Pro this past weekend, forces united for yet another heavy-hitting WQS two-star event.

Nate Yeomans, defending champ from 2006, took advantage of the welcoming conditions early, taking off right in front of the rocks, pulling into the wedged up barrels and following with multiple lips hits to the inside. From the beginning of the day, Yeomans looked on point and served as a crowd favorite until, Adam Virs paddled out in the final.

Virs looked unbeatable through the final, attacking the lefts with ferocious speed, applying his signature in-the-pocket snaps to every section that presented itself, connecting all of the best set waves to the inside. Yet Yeomans kept his cool through the heat, posting scores to keep himself well within range of Virs. Then with only minutes remaining in the heat, Yeomans pumped patiently down the line on an inside left before the eyes of a tense crowd. The silent crowd suddenly let out a roar as Yeomans boostsed three feet above the lip, stuck a perfect double grab air and staked claim to another title at 56th street.

The pro junior final was no yawn either. Following a big win at the Lost Pro Junior in Huntington Beach, Adam Wickwire came out killing it. In a heat consisting of the always-on-fire Cory Arrambide and a determined Nick Rozsa, the Florida native was able to pull the scores he needed to squeeze through and take his second consecutive pro junior title. Wickwire applied a strategy that had been ignored all day, opting to take the sets that swing wide of the jetty and hit the inside sandbar. Those swinger sets enabled Wickwire the ability to, according to a post-final frustrated Rozsa, “be overscored.” Despite the frustrations, a laughing Wickwire, soaked in Redbull, joked with his peers and the media during the award ceremony, “Yeah I might have been over scored on a couple.”

The normally crowded 56th jetty break served up fun lefts all day for the other competitors as well, consisting of numerous non-pro divisions from masters to mini groms. Everyone in the crowd cheered as a seven-year-old mini grom named Tyler made shoulder high heaving lefts look like two foot overhead West-Oz bombies. Following the heats, event sponsor Surfing Magazine provided a follow up to its hit debut of “the Surfing dark room” at nationals by providing yet another round of free digital photo print outs. Pros and grommets alike grabbed copies of the free samples, which displayed the best of their hi-performance top turns frozen in time. Regardless of their results, Chronic Tacos managed to put a smile on every competitors face, providing plenty of free food to feed the drained surfers.

All in all it was a beautiful day down at the Oakley Newport Beach Pro presented by {{{Jeep}}} as everyone left the beach with a full tummy and a freshly red face.
