With a name like Kowalski you’d think he was from Poland or something. But he’s from such better places than eastern Europe (although we hear Polish women are choice). Dylan splits his time between Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina and Haleiwa, Hawaii. How? His dad works in the film industry and is on location in NC, and his mom works for the airlines so skipping from place to place is as easy as stand-by. Having two homes allows Dylan to sharpen his skills and compete in a range of waves and conditions.
“Competing on the East Coast has been important because I’ve trained in small waves,” Dylan says. “But equally important has been competing in the big waves in Hawaii, especially world class spots like Haleiwa and Sunset. It’s also been great to be able to compete against the boys I go up against in Nationals.”
And Nationals is where his mind should be. He won the Explorer Mens Regional title at last year’s NSSA East Coast Championships, so challenging the best from the west coast and Hawaii is the next logical step.
“My goal for Nationals this year will be to make some finals,” Dylan says. “And it would mean everything to me to get a National title.”
