The California surf scene seems to begin in San Diego and end in Santa Cruz. Further south and you’re in Mex, further north and you’re in the great unknown. Look for Kadin Panesi to change that. Kadin comes from the mostly forgotten town of Pacifica, just a few miles south of San Francisco, and he’s fast becoming Northern California’s next big thing. How’s he doing it? By going south, of course.

Kadin’s realizes that to make a name for himself he must succeed against the best, and the best are in the NSSA Southwest Conference. The young goofy foot has been using his powerful and smooth surfing to consistently make finals against high-profile surfers like Colin Moran and Parker Coffin. He’s currently ranked sixth in the season’s ratings.

And even though Kadin occasionally migrates south to compete, he hasn’t neglected the local Northwest Conference, where he’s perched at the top of both the Open Mens and Open Junior ratings. This past weekend at stormy Steamer Lane, Kadin placed second in the Open Mens and made the finals of the Open Juniors. They had to reschedule the Junior final due to wind squalls, downpours and victory-at-sea conditions at the Lane. They will run the finals at this week’s event at C Street in Ventura.

Kadin’s okay with that. He’s used to going south.
