Where SURFING recognize surfers before they’re recognizable.

Name: Leila Hurst
Hometown: Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii
Age: 17
School: Kapaa High School
Sponsors: Vans, Von Zipper, Skull Candy, Schaper Boards, Sticky Bumps, Vertra

Its funny how different people looking at the same thing will perceive it differently. Like when we got the report from the NSSA that the surf at last weekend’s Banyan’s event on the big island was “a bombing 5-to 6-feet Hawaiian” and that Leila Hurst was “charging.” We don’t doubt that she was, but she’s not claiming it. “The surf was 2-to 3-feet and a lot of fun,” says the understated Leila.

Of course, it’s always a lot of fun when you’re coasting to your second NSSA victory of the season (the other was also at Banyans). Leila posted the highest single-wave score (8.5) and highest heat total (16.5) of the event. With her latest win the high school senior maintains her momentum and come June will look to add a fourth National title trophy to her mantle. Any other goals for the year? “Graduate high school,” she says.
