RESULTS CAN MAKE OR BREAK AN AMATEUR’S RISE TO THE BIG LEAGUES. NO BIG RESULTS, NO BIG CONTRACTS. Big finishes lead to opportunities and up until the 2012 East Coast Regional Championships this past April, Melbourne Beach’s Corey Howell had no big results attached to his name. He was relatively unknown, but then caught fire and won four titles in one week. People started talking.
With New Smyrna offering up challenging conditions, Howell surfed with a newfound intensity. He lit up the sloppy beachbreak with each consecutive heat, first taking the crown in the Airshow division and then carrying the momentum toward wins in High School Mens, Explorer Mens and the mother of all divisions, Open Mens. Victories like that get people talking. Eastern Surf Magazine editor Nick McGregor attests to Howell’s rise, saying, “Corey is a good kid with a level head who happens to be the most promising young goofyfoot in Florida today.” That’s a healthy claim supporting his recent run. And with Nationals fast approaching, you can bet that Corey will be looking to take his East Coast success across the country and to the Huntington Pier.
