WHAT DO PINK BOARDS, HAWAIIAN GIRLS AND DOMINATING PERFORMANCES HAVE IN COMMON? They’re all noticeable, like Kulia Doherty. Her merits, like her NSSA career, carry on. Her most recent success came at the Western Championships where she was crowned champion in the Open Womens division. Her hometown farm roots show in her ability to harvest the best peaks at beachbreaks like Salt Creek and Huntington Pier. And with her intimate local-wave knowledge and recent victory, Kulia is bound for success at Nationals. At the very least, she’ll make you notice her. —Michael Kilcullen
