GONE ARE THE DAYS OF BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL SURFER BY CHANCE. For the new breed is just that — they are bred. A little nudge from Pops and the lifelong passion begins. It progresses from playful wave-riding to radical fin-throwing and stand-up tubes. Just ask Nick Marshall, who at age 4 was given his first wave by his father, John, while his mother, Hilary, cheered him on from the beach. He is now storming NSSA podiums up and down the California coast.

The Marshall brothers: Jake, 13, Nick, 10 and Connor, 8, are grommets on the rise. While Jake has seen tremendous competitive success in the NSSA ranks over the last few seasons, little brother Nick isn’t going to let him commandeer the spotlight. His 2011-2012 season has been pure fire. Competing in four NSSA divisions, Nick’s won five contests in the Open Mini Groms division and three in Explorer Super Groms division. Eight victories. But Nick can also hang with the big boys, and is currently ranked fourth in the Open Boys division. The young goofyfoot’s winning season shows just how explosive his surfing is and with a competitive sibling rivalry already brewing, the Marshall family is sure to continue its ascent up the amateur ranks and into the professional realm.—Nate Zoller
