Kilian Garland ReCENT Grades:
First Place, Open Juniors, NSSA Western Championships Remarks:
Sixteen-year-old Kilian Garland is no stranger to the winner’s circle. During his long, decorated NSSA career, the loose, lanky regularfoot has captured three national titles and four Western titles. Make that five. In fun, mixed-up South Side Huntington peaks, Garland scorched his second consecutive Open Juniors Westerns victory in late May. While his continuing dominance is no surprise, Kilian’s list of biggest rivals might be. Garland, who splits his time between Santa Barbara and the small, Central Coast town of Orcutt, claims Kellen Ellison, Chad Compton and Jonny Craft as his toughest competitors – all guys who live north of the LA masses. "I guess our great year of waves up here has helped our surfing," says Garland of the "northern front." "I had so many good Rincon sessions this past winter, it’s a joke." But Garland knows epic Rincon sessions won’t take him much farther than the Cove. In order to expand his domain above and beyond the Golden State, he’s looking to master serious slop. Which means, unfortunately, he has to pass on a lot of those perfect points and gorge on Pismo’s and Santa Barbara’s mushiest troughs. A dirty job, but it’s a sacrifice this country boy is willing to make. "You gotta be pumped to surf crappy waves," he says. "It’s what separates the few from the many."
