This Month’s Top Student:
Dane Reynolds, 17, Ventura, California This Month’s Grades:
First in the PSTA’s {{{Subaru Baja}}} U.S. Surfing Championships in Ventura;
QuarterfinalIsT in the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Sobe Chocolate Remarks:
When you swim with the sharks, you either get eaten or grow more ferocious. After a few weeks in South Africa, including several J-Bay freesurfs alongside man-eating WCTers like Taj Burrow, Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning, Dane Reynolds came through hungrier than ever. "They were out there all the time. That kinda made it frustrating because I couldn’t get many waves, but watching what they do out there was pretty inspiring." Whether it was inspiration or perspiration, the 17-year-old Venturan came back a step higher on the competitive food chain, nabbing a third at the Op Newport Classic, winning the PSTA’s U.S. Championships in Ventura and then dominating his early heats in the O’Neill Cold Water Classic by combining solid rail surfing and dynamic aerials before going down in a wave-starved quarterfinal heat. While he’s clearly the man to beat in the NSSA events this year, Dane is looking like America’s best counter to Australia’s swelling junior ranks. "I’m going to probably go down to Australia and do a couple of the ‘QSes there," Dane says. "I hear there’s some really good competition there."
