This morning, before the Pipeline Trials started, Owen Wright was surfing maxed out Pipe when he got caught inside and took multiple waves on the head. After returning to the beach on his own he felt dizzy and went into his bedroom at the Rip Curl house to take a nap. When he woke up, his condition had worsened — he was visibly disoriented and was having difficulty breathing so the guys at the house called for help. Just a few minutes ago, Owen was loaded into an ambulance and taken to the hospital. At this point, that is the only information available but we’ll update you as soon as we hear anything more. In the meantime, all our best to Owen.
Owen has a severe concussion and he was just transferred from Kahuku to Queens hospital. He’s going to be fine, but at this point it’s safe to assume he won’t be competing in the Pipe Masters tomorrow. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Owen.
