The US Open of Surfing is, for lack of better word, notorious. It is notorious for drawing festival-sized crowds to Huntington Beach. It is notorious for extraordinary surfing in average waves. It is notorious for the defiling things that young adults do to one another in hotel rooms. Summed up, it is notorious for being more of a mess than Czechoslovakia in 1968. But there is a glory in the chaos and the event is stacked with spectacles that you would be cheating yourself to miss. The contest starts tomorrow, July 20, with the opening round of the Pro Jr. HB won’t sleep until Sunday, July 28, when the horn of the finals will be tooted. We’ve compiled a list to help you dig your way through the teenage wasteland and find some diamonds in the Open.
Slow Dance: Every young woman wishes for Craig Anderson to be her prom date. The problem is that there are not enough of those rustic locks to go around. But on Saturday, July 20, everyone can snag a song with Craig. Ando’s movie, Slow Dance premiers at the Quiksilver headquarters in HB at 7:30 PM, probably not sharp. Dane Reynolds produced the 30-minute flick, and if that doesn’t get your panties loosened then we don’t know what will.
#ILoveHB: And HB loves you back. As a token of this endearment, SURFING Magazine has teamed up with New Era to give you something in exchange for nothing. And if the notion of winning free stuff lights a flame within your heart, then you ought to click here. May lady luck kiss you gently.
A Surfing Contest: An exciting one, at that. Dane Reynolds, Kelly Slater, Julian Wilson, Kolohe Andino, Mitch Coleborn, Dusty Payne, Josh Kerr, and even that little jumping bean Adriano de Souza will be battling under the pier. With a friendly swell on its way, you can bet the farm that the gentlemen will impress. And if you’re a fan of the gentle women, you’ll be pleased to know that the US Open is a stop on the ladies ‘CT.
Pope’s Living Room: The Pope #LovesHB more than anyone. So in the old man’s honor, SURFING Magazine decided to take over a pub on the intersection of Main Street and Walnut Avenue. Stop in, rub some elbows, shake some hands, maybe even get drunk and tell Travis Logie that you love him.
Music: Bobby Marley once said, “One good thing about music, when it hits, you feel no pain.” Bob didn’t know what it felt like to have some degenerate in white sunglasses bumping and grinding all up in your personal space to MGMT, like at the 2011 US Open, but 2013 will be different. There might still be a handful of white sunnies, but they will be grooving to The Faint, FMLYBN, Twin Shadow, Modest Mouse and Matt Costa. The bands will play in the sand on Thursday and Friday night. May you feel no pain, nor bumping, nor grinding.
Van Doren Invitational Bowl Jam: The du Prado bowl in Marseilles, France is sacred ground to our landlocked brothers and sisters. And the folks at Vans have recreated the bowl for a jam session even sweeter than blackberries. If you skate, or if you dress and get tattoos like you skate, do watch this event at 2:45 PM on Sunday, July 28.
