As the Surfing America USA Championships built to a thundering finish yesterday, SURFING’s Steve Sherman captured the tension and joy of competitors on the beach.
- Keala Naihe of Kona, Hawaii. Hooded.
- The North Shore’s Kalani David, age 12.
- Boys U18 winner Evan Geiselman sets his sights.
- Paia, Maui’s Tanner Hendrickson enters the zone.
- Jake Marshall in the throes of American pride. Maybe.
- Little local Kei Kobayashi, right at home at the USA Championships.
- Matt Biolos with …Lost team rider Ian Gentil, winner of the Boys U14.
- Kolohe Andino, Mike “Snips” Parsons and Dino Andino — the Trestles brain trust.

We all know using “Andino” and “brain trust” in a sentence is an open invite to punchlines.
How many 16 year olds do you know who are making 5 figure salaries for surfing all day? Seems like Kolohe’s making some pretty smart choices.
money isn’t everything.
Kolohe has a lot of pressure. I hate the fact that he has sold out to the man but his dad is a tough dude. I watched him yell at Kolohe on the beach at Lowers a few months ago. It was heavy and I could tell he is being pushed by a lot of people around him. Hopefully one day he will wake up and make decisions that better him and not his dad.
5 figure salary? like 10,000???
he’s making seven figures…
