The Puerto Escondido Big Wave Challenge Is On For Friday

She’s a tricky beast, that Puerto Escondido.

Kind at times and cruel at others. She could give you the wave of your life or she might just suck you around in a current for an hour, then entice you with a perfect-looking medium one that you’ll swing on and inevitably miss to take a set on your head that’ll send you to some sand-torn form of underwater hell. Puerto!

Oh and on Friday, she’ll hand someone a Big Wave World Tour win.

“The swell we’ve been tracking from the South Pacific has intensified and we’ve called the Puerto Escondido Challenge ‘on’ for a Friday start,” said Peter Mel, WSL BWT Commissioner. “We’re looking at 30-foot-plus waves projected for the day with favorable winds and tides.”

This is the first BWWT event at Puerto, so it’s hard to know what to expect. Greg Long, the Puerto fan of all Puerto fans, is notorious for waiting hours to catch a wave…then getting the wave of the summer, of course. Still, it’ll be interesting to see how a moody wave like Puerto effects the competitive strategies out there. Given the time constraint of a heat, do you still selectively wait a while for a wave? Or do you send it on risky ones and possibly/probably get clobbered? Who knows!

Excitement assured, however, it’ll be a great one to watch.
