2007 Quiksilver Pro France Day 3

posted by / News / September 25, 2007

CONDITIONS: 3-4 foot storm surf
HEATS HELD: Heat 8-16 of Round 2
NATURE’S CALL: Not looking too good
PREDICTIONS: Don’t expect Kelly, Mick, Andy, Taj or Joel to lose before the quarters

After getting out the water Josh Kerr admitted it was the biggest air he had landed in his life. Two high scoring rides later Kerr defeated Fred Patacchia in Round Two

Today was tough. Wind, rain and big, ugly storm swell forced a move to Santocha – a protected jetty in Capbreton – where the surf was a mess, but a least a contestable mess. Jeremy Flores was first up. He lives just down the road and has been surfing this spot since he was 8, but he was nervous just the same. Yesterday’s false start (Heat 7 of Round 2 ran before a searing onshore blew us out for the day) didn’t help matters. “Yes I do feel a little bit of pressure surfing here,” he said. “Everyone is expecting me to win.” Win the event, that is. Jeremy’s serious. His houseguest for this week is a Brazilian jiu jitsu champ named Ricardo Arona – a tattooed mass of brown granite. Easily one of the most fearsome humans on the planet. Shaun Cansdell didn’t stand a champ against a guy with backing like that.

Fred Patacchia didn’t have it easy either. Not when Josh Kerr takes a look at the tattered lineup and only sees launch pads. It was 6 foot and offshore for him today. His first scoring wave – an 8.67 for an impossibly technical alley oop. His second – a 9.67 for straight air so high it looked like a tow-at. “Probably had the best ramp section I’ve had in a long time,” said Kerr. Who needs good waves when you can do airs and when heats? “A lot of the top seeds these days only surf good waves, that’s what they’re know to do, so when the waves get a little funky they might be a little off beat,” he said.

Brazilian QS warriors don’t need good waves either. This stuff’s like a tasty bowl of Acai to them. It’s not often you see two pure surfers like Danny Wills and Bruce Irons get combo-d by the likes of Bernardo Miranda and Raoni Monteiro, but you saw it today. If the waves stay like this (and they might) for the final rounds, don’t be surprised if you hear a guy fala Portugues on the podium.

What’s next? Who knows. Tomorrow’s supposed to be more of the same and the weekend’s looking small, so Thursday and Friday (which are still expected to be onshore) could be the days. Expect the boys to the ready. Mick Fanning will be. He paddled out last night into a veritable washing machine where no one was getting waves and still managed to put together a couple solid ones in 30 minutes. Afterwards he looked out into the lineup afterwards and contemplated it all for a while. What he thinking of? Trestles? Dane Reynolds? Kelly sneaking up behind him? No way. All that’s gone. Forgotten. Eyes on the prize.
