Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Day 1

SURF: 2-3 foot D-Bah
EVENTS HELD: Men’s Round 1
NATURE’S CALL: Getting worse
PREDICTED: Everyone thought today would be a lay day, who knows for tomorrow.

“Dane Reynolds and Jordy Smith are in a whole different league to most of the young guys who come onto the World Tour. It’s really scary what both Dane and Jordy can do on a wave, so it will be really interesting to see how they go in these first couple of events”
- Luke Munro after beating Dane Reynolds in Round 1

After all the hype, all the anticipation, today was finally the day for Dane Reynolds and Jordy Smith. With wild predictions coming from all corners of the surf world that both would be winning events and challenging for world titles – in their first year on tour – this was a reality check. In small, WQS style waves at D-Bah, it was a pair of vets named Luke who came through – not the rooks. Dane went down in a super tight high scoring affair to local Luke Munro while Jordy has his hands full with a fired up Luke Stedman. Meanwhile, the usual suspects, Mick, Parko, Kelly, Bede and Taj all won their round 1 heats and now get to chill.

The Dane/Munro heat was the most exciting of the round. Munro got off to an early lead but Dane built rhythm in the second half of the heat and put his devastating frontside rail to work in the punchy little rights. Munro, though, to his credit, hung tough and dropped a 9.5 at the end by lifting his surfing as far as it could go. The end result could have gone either way, but a statement was made. Dane’s going to rip this year, but the guys he’s up against will to.

Kelly’s heat was interesting as well. He doesn’t seem to have much interest in this year’s tour. He said afterwards, “I’m not going to surf all the contests this year that’s for sure.” He looked unfocused for the majority of the heat – letting a normally overmatched Rodrigo Dornelles into the best waves. With twenty seconds to go, however, the old competitive fire kicked in and he found a little nug where he could fit in two huge hacks and that was that.

And the Irons’s? Bruce came to life as well at the end of this heat lifting into a couple big airs and sticking them to sail into Round 3. Andy, looking fit, happy and healthy, didn’t have much luck with the waves and went down to Miky Picon. Look for him to rebound hard in Round 2.

With Round 1 in the books and out of the way, warm up time is over. All eyes are now on the maps in the hopes that a big enough low can develop in the Coral Sea to send us some more proper swell at Snapper later next week. Things can change here quickly and last year showed just how good it can get. Cross your fingers it does.

Jordy Smith had a less-than-spectacular debut in Round 1
