WaveWatch.com Forecast Predicts Incoming Swell and Contestable Conditions

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Jan. 16, 2009 – Contest organizers have called the RC’s Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge Presented by Jack’s for Tuesday, January 20 and Wednesday, January 21 at the north side of the Huntington Beach Pier. WaveWatch.com, the official forecaster for the event, predicts those days will be the most contestable of the contest window, which was slotted for Jan. 20-25.

“There will still be WNW swell left over from the bigger pulse that hits over this weekend and some shorter-period more westerly energy from a second storm that spun in behind the first,” says Adam Wright, forecaster at WaveWatch.com. “The overall swell direction will be WNW 275-{{{300}}} degrees, but with a lot of the energy above the 285-degree mark. There will also be a touch of background SW energy in the water (not enough to really be surfable by itself, but it will help break up some of the NW sets.” Wright also predicts consistent chest-shoulder high waves with some inconsistent bigger sets mixing in on the lower tides.

Weather wise, expect mostly light/variable to light offshore winds on Tuesday morning and mostly light/variable winds (with some chance of light fog) on Wednesday. Weak to moderate onshore winds will be on tap through the afternoons.

The RC’s Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge Presented by Jack’s will dole out more than $20,000 in cash and prizes to the top teams and individuals at the end of competition on Wednesday. With a solid list of established professionals and up-and-coming talent confirmed to compete, and the chance to claim a title that the likes of World Champions Shaun Tomson, Tom Curren, Martin Potter, Sunny Garcia and Kelly Slater have won in the past, the event is sure to be a battle royal.

The format will feature four-man teams in an open-draw format. Team results will be determined by the placement of individual competitors. Surfers will receive points in each heat (4 pts for 1st, 3 pts for 2nd, 2 pts for 3rd and 1 pt for 4th place). The four teams earning the most points will share in $20,000 worth of advertising and the top eight individuals will receive a cash payout worth $10,000.

The RC’s Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge Presented by Jack’s will be webcast live for both days of competition, with live announcing and commentating from industry icons like Dave Stansfield and Peter “PT” Townend, live scoring, special guests and athlete interviews, online giveaways, instant replays, highlight video clips, and more.

About RC Surfboards
Robert Cirac (aka “RC”) originally founded RC Surfboards in Huntington Beach in 1969. With a solid surfing background and a talent for shaping, he quickly became the go-to guy for many top California surfers. Pursuing a need for adventure, he left RC’s to travel the world and venture into many different business endeavors, but 25 years later he returned to the surf industry as a shaper and owner of RC Surfboards and Nu Foam, one of the main surfboard blanks manufacturers and distributors in the world. He has since begun giving back through the RC Surfing Foundation where he plans to build a fund to help the less fortunate young surf lover, either with a dream to become a pro surfer or a master of shaping boards.
