SURFING’S iconic lensman Rob Gilley is back at the helm of Pacific Surf Gallery

After a 4 year hiatus, one of SURFING’s legendary photographers, Rob Gilley, is back at the helm of Pacific Surf Gallery, in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California.

Gilley is returning to the business he founded in 2002 after years of fruitful discovery (see the August Issue) and because of a new vision he has for the gallery’s North San Diego location. “As well-received as the gallery was during my original tenure, I began to realize how much more a place like this could be,” says Gilley. “In addition to being a location where you can buy the best surf art ad photography in the world, it’s also going to be an art center: a place to take classes and workshops taught by the best oceanic-inspired art staff I can assemble; a place to rent high-end surf photography equipment; a place to arrange personal photography shoots and art commissions — even custom picture framing. It’s a full-service business, I guess you could say.”

That’s a mouthful of top-notch stuff, we know, so Rob elaborates: “Of the new features that we are adding, the art and photography school will be our priority,” says Rob. “I’ve already made agreements with one of the world’s leading digital photography experts as well as one of the most successful Plein Air seascape artist around. I’ll also be teaching some professional surf photography classes myself.” Classes begin this month and they will be bite-sized, one night- or day-a-week sessions.

“I have to say that the best thing about having my own business again,” adds Gilley, “is that I can close the store anytime I want to go surf or shoot.” Yeah, fringe benefits never hurt anyone.

So if you’re interested in anything remotely related to surf art or photography, you’ll want to visit Pacific Surf Gallery. Call ahead to set up a good time.

It wasn’t the same without you, Rob. Now we know where to find you again — wish I was closer and could take a class.
