Santa Cruz, CA (April 12, 2012) – After spending her summer collecting bombs at Puerto Escondido’s Mexican Pipeline and chasing down moving mountains at Northern California’s notorious Mavericks, Savannah Shaughnessy (Santa Cruz, CA) has earned a shot at the 2012 Billabong XXL Girls Performance Award.
The criteria for the prestigious award goes to the woman athlete who puts on the greatest number of outstanding performances at the most diverse number of venues over the course of the entire year. Excellence in the water and leadership in safety in both paddle-in and tow-in surfing disciplines will be considered.
“I’m really happy to see Savannah nominated as one of the finalists for the XXL women’s performance award. Over the past few years, Savannah’s been pushing the limits of big wave paddle-in surfing for women. She’s done this by paddling on all the biggest and heaviest days in Puerto Escondido and Mavericks. Plus, She’s not just sitting out there; Savannah’s catching bombs, taking wipeouts and coming back out with a smile. Savannah’s on her way to becoming the best womens big wave paddle-in surfer ever. – Derek Dunfee, 2009 Billabong XXL Monster Paddle In Award Winner
Last month Savannah was honored at the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational closing ceremonies by earning the distinguished “Top Female Performance of the Year Award” for her exceptional performances this winter at Mavericks.
“It has been exciting to watch the progression of Savannah in big surf. So many people show up to surf Mavericks with so much excitement but don’t last more than a few sessions or a season. Savannah has kept coming back and proved her competency, enthusiasm and deservingness of being a XXL finalist.”
– Zach Wormhoudt, 2004 Billabong XXL Monster Paddle In Award Winner
In August last year Savannah was invited to compete in the “Mexican Pipeline Tube Ride Invitational”. As the only woman invited to compete in the event, Savannah was once again humbled and thankful to be included alongside such notable big wave surfers as Rusty Long and Derek Dunfee as well as the Puerto regulars who surf the heavy beachbreak each season.

Savannah’s XXL submissions include six waves caught on video and four waves shot with a still camera from sessions at Mavericks and Puerto Escondido. This is the second year Savannah has been a finalist for the Billabong XXL Girls Performance Award.
“I am stoked to see a woman like Savannah dedicated to charging big surf and it shows when she’s out surfing at mavericks.” – Jeff Clark, Mavericks Founder
