Spy Presents 2nd Annual Sun Diego High School Surf Team Showdown

San Diego-based eyewear brand SPY®—known for its happy irreverence and surf heritage—is once again partnering with Sun Diego Boardshops for a fun and unique surfing event uniting 12 San Diego high school surf teams and their communities.

The Sun Diego High School Showdown Presented by SPY will feature The Game™ format—a one-of-a-kind competition designed by ASP World Title runner-up Brad Gerlach, where surfers work together for the win, rather than only attaining scores for their individual performance. Each team will experience an individualistic sport in the same way their classmates do with team sports like baseball, football or basketball. Last year’s division winners—Point Loma Pointers and University City Centurions—will defend their titles against San Diego’s finest high school surf teams.

“With so much great feedback and happy schools from last year’s event we had to team up with Sun Diego and do it even bigger and better,” says Chris Abad, SPY surf team manager. “We expanded the event to add four more high schools and an extra day to the competition schedule so everyone can get in on the fun. Gerlach’s Game™ format is a great team-building exercise for the kids and, like our brand, takes an unusual approach to the normal way of doing things.”

The only surfing competition that incorporates timeouts, coaches, and referees, The Game™ allows each high school to be represented by a maximum of 12 athletes. Teams are comprised of four starters, two substitutes and six non-active reserves. Like a three-inning baseball game, “heats” have a top and bottom of each period lasting 12 minutes, with a total running time of 90 minutes. Each ride will be scored individually; with top wave scores added together to form the final team tally and determine the winners. Further legitimizing the event, the judging panel is comprised of former and current professional surfers. Awards for Most Valuable Player and Most Radical Maneuver will go to standout performers at the end of each game.

The competition kicks-off at 7:30 a.m. on June 1 with Division 1 hitting the water, immediately followed by additional divisions, with the action concluding at 5:00 p.m. for the day. The action on Sunday, June 2 will also commence at 7:30 a.m. with finals scheduled for after lunch, immediately followed by an awards ceremony. Prior to the final round, SPY surf athletes will hit the water for an exciting and progressive expression session. Participants will be treated to food and drinks from Señor Grubby’s eatery as the day unfolds.
