SURFING’s Lost Sections Dept: Austin Smith-Ford

posted by / News / September 27, 2010

The reality of Taylor Steele’s Innersection is that most segments won’t make the movie; the latest round alone saw 54 entries. SURFING would like to pay our respects to some of our favorite, under-appreciated entries that you can no longer see on Innersection. These surfers are just supporting actors now, but by next year, any one could have a leading role.

“Surf comedy” is a notoriously agonizing genre. Most of us would rather surf fin-less than watch pro surfers try to deliver dialogue. Especially on Innersection, where you might as well just have the plumber show up and get down to business. Cracking jokes is not ripping.

Until now.

Santa Cruz surfer Austin Smith-Ford and director Andy Hofman actually managed to pull off an entertaining bit of humor without making us want to shake our fists at “In God’s Hands.” The section takes a cool tour of a classic surf town. Offers an eclectic variety of footage and angles. And serves as proof that the kid with three car-dealerships for a name surfs really really good-looking.

Who’s laughing now? Austin made Innersection’s elite Top 10 list, but is gonna let it slide on the Wild Card round. “People have seen the section by now,” says Austin, “so we’ve lost our element of surprise. We’re just glad to have gotten such a good response. In a few years maybe someone will dig this up again and get stoked.”

A few years? We’re stoked right now.

Hey, Andy, Yahoo for you! I watched your video and loved it. Couldn’t figure out how to get a message to you then, though. Your parents are so proud of you! That video was really fun. Jim is still attempting to put together a video of your wedding, which we loved so much. But….his excuse is we now have Granddaughter #2 and we are kind of busy with that project. We babysit #1 twice a week too, so the joint is jumping. Anyway, congratulations and keep up the good work. Cassandra wrote the sweetest thankyou note…you found yourself a keeper. Best wishes forever. Jim and Ginger

Austin Rips big time. Andy’s filming techniques were fresh and unique, the story line was cool, Santa Cruz was going off, Bravo for a well done video segment. Let’s make it the opening for the first Buell wetsuit movie. Oh yeah, his wetsuits rule too.

Really great video, & surfing! Nice to see my old stomping grounds too, (’73). Sure looks like a lot of guys out in Santa Cruz these days!
