BRUCE IRONS' ASP EXIT PLAN

"I'm going back to being a freesurfer," he says. "It’s what I was meant to do."

Bruce contemplates his next big chapter

Finally. After four and a half years of tough losses and sporadic highlights, the once-touted “best freesurfer in the world” will soon be back out there to reclaim his crown. At the end of 2008, no matter how he finishes on the ASP World Tour, Bruce Irons is going back to what he was born to do: not compete, but create. Now at 28, Irons admits his stint on tour was not what he expected it to be. No matter how dreamy the Dream Tour is, it’s still a bunch of contests, which just never quite fit Bruce’s style of surfing. Sure, he had some high notes. His second-place finish to brother Andy at the 2004 Quik Pro in Hossegor was a storybook contest in storybook conditions, and we figured that was only the beginning of Irons-clad finals. But it was never to be. After finishing 9th in 2005, Bruce has steadily dropped off, disappearing – as he calls it – “in the back of the cattle truck.” So, after thinking about it for the past few months, he’s decided to break out of the cattle truck and roam free. He wants to finish his commitments on this year’s tour and take one more shot at winning a contest, but after that, Bruce 2.0 will be unchained and on the loose. Look out.

[Interview conducted in between the Tahiti and Fiji events at Bruce’s home in Princeville. After a solid quarterfinal finish at Teahupo’o and catching four onos the day before, he was in high spirits.]

Expect to see a lot more of Bruce in this neighborhood. En route to a second-place finish at Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.

SURFING MAGAZINE: When did you start thinking you wanted to be off tour?
BRUCE IRONS: I’ve just kind of been stuck in this rut. Same places, same schedule. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t like surfing heats. When it’s not good, I don’t have the motivation. And then I was really worried all along that if I fell off tour, Volcom would drop me. I wasn’t communicating with them about that and I was struggling on tour. I didn’t like the way I was surfing. I wasn’t happy with it at all. So, I talked to Volcom and basically said I wasn’t happy on tour. And I asked them what they thought of me not doing it. They said they’d be stoked if I wasn’t on it. They said they could see my struggle on tour. That I tried it and it wasn’t my thing. I prefer to go back to how I started my whole surfing trip which is to go on surf trips and make videos. That’s where I’m most happy.

So, it’s just been this buildup over the years…
I got there and I figured, after a while, that I just got to admit it. I’m not going to win a world title. You have to be on your game to win a world title and be good at every single spot. Some spots I found myself struggling every year. And if you’re not there to win a world title, I really don’t think there’s any point in being there. If I just stay on tour, I’ll be stuck in the back of the bus like the rest of the non-contenders. If you’re not in the Top 5, who are you? You’re stuck in back of the cattle bus. I’m just going to step away now because I feel like I’m at a good point in my life to start that next chapter, that next phase in my career. Being in the mags again, making surf videos. And having fun.

What surfing plans do you have once you’re off tour?
I’m not dreaming up crazy varials and rodeos like Dane guys. I’ve never even come close to doing a rodeo and I’ve tried hundreds. Varials, I tried, asking Dane how to do ’em, and it was all just fins and shins every time. No good. For me, I still like just going down the line as fast as I can on a good-size wave and going for the high, lofty punt. High as you can go. Even if you land in the flats and get smoked, it still looks pretty sick. Plus, big Teahupo’o, slabs in Oz, big pits in the South Pacific, Pipeline all winter…I want to do all of that. My schedule is to not have a schedule. The schedule is the storms. For so long, I’ve known exactly where I would be at any given time of the year. It’s stagnant. I like change. And it’s time for a change.

[For the full exclusive interview on Bruce Irons’ next chapter, be sure to check the September issue of SURFING Magazine, on newsstands in late July.]

As fast as he can go, as high as he can get. Alley-oop in Bali, April 2008.

Brucy is core this guy kills it. Contest is bullshit. Contest brings the worst in surfing. Brucy is the best surfer in the World.

Thank god! Bruce is going back to being one of the best surfers in the world.

Contest surfing is to restrictive. Bruce is all about doing what he wants when he wants to. The guy rips and is def. one of the top free surfers in the world.

Bruce is a boozing looser with no drive or work ethic. As the tour has become more profession he has struggled more and more. No one would doubt his skill but he is not in the same league as the top guys these days. Successful people work harder than the rest. Bruce would rather be drinking beer and betting on the nags than doing the hard work required to be successful- hence taking the easy route of being a free surfer. Most people would give there left nut to get on the tour and this clown is too lazy to be bothered. Good riddence!

Free spirit... competitions are evil, taking the essence, fun & spontaneity out of what it is truly about. Xx

bruce is fuckin pimp no matter what hes doin. fuck the tour.. it aint for buce. it woulda been siick to see him win a title, but whatever. i will be more stoked to see him punting huge airs and getting some new video parts!!! BRUCE IS LOVE!!

I agree completely with Bruce Gabafornkuinchiskyvic. Bruce obviously is a ridiculously talented surfer, but out of the water the guy's useless. The WCT is for REAL proffesionals now. Not just really good surfers. You actually have to work for it now... and not party like crazy. I almost think that the reason andy's been doing so poorly (I say poorly but thats relevent in the top 10 every year) because he's been partying SO much and maybe with Brucey gone he will start to refocus. Honestly, I think guys like the Brazilians deserve more exposure then Bruce. Sure he's amazing, but he takes up like 4 pages in a magazine. Those guys work SO hard and don't end up getting much for it, where guys like bruce (and dane more recently) couldn't care less. Crappy attitude. They were given too much too early.

Bruce was amazing at the Eddie contest... the year he won the Bay was close to closing out... I watched him get barreled on macking Waimea on a borrowed Brewer from Makuakai... this is the formula for Bruce Irons... Good Waves + Good Surfboards = Great Surfing... Come surf with me at Makaha next winter! Aloha Brian

Bruce should look no further than Occy who won his World Title at 33 years old. Definetly take some time off and let the surfing come back to where it was before. What is not acceptable is Bruce thinking that he can not win the title. Bruce can.

I love to watch Bruce surf. I love that Bruce will be free surfing more. The tour doesn't always have waves. He has one of the best styles and not many guys do on tour besides Parko... a lot of them just look like machines. I think everyone should realize his true talent of surfing, Bruce Irons, and enjoy to watch him free surf and not waste his talent on tour. The tour has a lot of hype but I bet it is only because it is the only show in town... wait until those guys have other options... I hear the ASP is a joke. I can't say it enough... I am thrilled Bruce Irons will freesurf. The movies and magazine articles these next years will be have something great to display. Good on you Bruce. You are a wise guy and have such a great career ahead of you. And if you get paid multi millions to not be obligated to a 12 event grueling tour then you go celebrate that dude! Drink the beer and bet on the nags like that one hater wrote above me...I prefer to watch a real talent like you surf not a WCT machine!

Too bad Brucey is leaving ...I've always hoped that he would kick Andy's butt, even tho Andy's been better...who knows maybe he'll be back some day after having realized that World Tour is more fun :P, totally agree with By Fly. oh I hope u read this Bruce.

I have been a long time Bruce fan and I think his surfing is mind-blowing. However, it seems like his ego couldn't take the growing ranks of uber talented surfers who are coming up. It just seems like a cop out to say that the Dream Tour isn't what he thought it would be. He never got ripped off, never became a casualty of unfair judging, he simply didn't try. Guys like him hate losing when they are trying and he never tried because he was too scared to put his ego on the line. He is still one of my favorite surfers, but man, I am just disappointed that he is giving up.

FUCK yea Bruce! The tour ain't shit! I cannot wait to see the movies you will make soon. SICK! I would way rather watch you free surf and then do nuts events like Pileline and the Eddie! You are so lucky to be able to do that. I would fucking give my left nut for your life. I would like to see some of the other top guys drop off the tour and do this. You guys should have your own tour and just surf sick waves. Competing is for kids. Freesurfing is for champions! GOOD FOR YOU BRUCEY!!!!!
Posted Fri May23, 2008, 12:30 AM — By Happy Hawaiian!
Bruce is on the right track. I hope more people take follow in his path. Competitions aren't everything and so many guys really do become these machines on tour. Dane should join Bruce. So should Kelly. A few competitions here and there and freesurfing sound like an ideal. Wish Bruce could have nailed the World Title but his brother will take it on for him. Andy on Tour Bruce off..... these kids will keep the surf industry interesting. Nice to see Bruce stand up for himself and do what he wants and still get paid more than any guy in the top 5. I look up to you Bruce! See you in the movies!

Hey guy who writes in named Gabafornkuinchiskyvic....you are just a judgemental hater. You say Bruce is a boozing loser?????? No work ethics??????? Bruce and Andy are sober right now... go figure to how much you really know. The work ethics they have are a little different from your 9-5 aren't they? He is a real proffessional and will always be in a league of his own. He is considered one of the top guys and he isn't even rated in the top.... the ASP World Tour is just a bunch of numbers beside names.... look at the big picture and realize competitions aren't everything in a career. If you got paid 7 figures to travel all year long to only compete or 7 figures to charge and rip perfect waves whenever you wanted what would you do you boozing loser?! Bruce you fucking rule! Good move! I am your #1 Fan!!!!

I think everything in moderation. A balanced year of surfing perfect waves whenever you want, doing a few really prestigious surf competitions, and enjoying what you do are key. You have always been my favorite surfer to watch with a truly beautiful style that compares to no one else. I look forward to watching you surf the way you should. This change will only open many doors and raise many brows! But to know your career and achievements will only get bigger and better is SO exciting! Take it to the next level! I love you. Mochi & Mia

Right on, Bruce...good for you! Wish you would have had more chances to kick your brothers ass on tour, because you are a much better all around surfer anyway...much more dynamic and, quite frankly, more fun to watch! Do your thing, man, and make some more killer videos to inspire. Dude, it's your life; do what you want! Screw the critics...they're just jealous that don't have the liberty to make such a decision.

Less Bruce on the 'CT means more of him in the mags and in the videos. That's good for Bruce, and good for us watchers. And if he enjoys a Corona or ten between boosts and barrels... more power to him.

BRUCE, COMPETITION OR FREE SURF ARE THE SAME IN A WAY, THEY ARE A MEAN TO GET TO EXCELLENCE...SAD YOU COULD NOT TUNE TO THE WCT...HAVE A GOOD ONE BUT REMEMBER IT IS NOT THE JUDGES WHO DECIDE, IT IS THE WAVE!!! GO WITH THE WAVE LISTEN TO HER AND YOU'LL BE FINE...
Posted Fri May23, 2008, 3:13 AM — By Jimbo
Bruce will never win a world title because he doesn't have the consistency or versatility required to win at the various locations on the tour. Sure he can punt big airs and charge big waves but it takes a lot more than that to win a world title. At least he's not a moron like Josh Kerr who didn't requalify and decided to tell everyone that he actually quit. Fact is, Kerr didn't have any say in the matter, he was off tour whether he liked it or not.

Thats the way it is, thats what most hawaiians do, thats what I do, whats what people should do, follow your dreams, and do what you like, but when competitions screw the way you see surfing, then your fucked, some of us were not meant to be champions, but we know, WE ARE.

Bruce is a quitter. He cant hack it that his brother is better then him. There is no question that the best all round surfers are on tour right now. Bruce just admitted that he cannot compete with the airs the new crop is doing. His big down the line air will be as cool as the floater. Say hello to Robbie Bain, Archy, Eggers etal in rehab for us. Lets keep buying Volcom stuff to support thier alchy drug addicted team members :)

Bruce congrats on your decision i think it's the best move you've made. Your roots are freesurfing thats where all of surfing began unfortunately some of us don't have the mind set like robots for the tour. If you need some title to make you feel like you've accomplished something in your life look at all the spots you've mastered. You are an ambassador of surfing. As for the negetive people commenting i bet you wished you could freesurf for Volcom and get paid you Green Eyed Monster! Bruce all the stoke and aloha to brother see you in the water.

All you Bruce hatters on this board are jealous little wankers! Your just jealous the way the guy surfs. Probably jealous the guy has the choice to live his life the way he wants without the strings of having to have structure you wish you had. Keep hatin you wankers. Bruce kills it! Look at Machado, did the same thing. didn't like the contest thing and having to be judged on his individual surfing. Machado surfs better than 90% of those dudes on tour. He just had the balls to walk away, just like Bruce is going to do. Keep doin you Bruce! F the rest

Bruce is my favorite surfer but I have to admit him dropping off tour, saying he can never win a world title, is disappointing. I always thought he was more of a fighter, willing to thug it out to take his free surfing into the tour and blow it up, turn the whole ASP on its head. If he wants to drop off, fine, he'll always be a great surfer, but dont go down without a fight. You still have 8 events to win that title, Bruce. DO IT!!!!!

I think Bruce will be a little disappointed in himself later. The new tour does allow for expression, we worked hard in the old days to make it so, now it is. What I don't like is I don't feel he gave it everything he could and is making excuses for himself. He has good talent, great style, and not enough motivation. But Ok, competition isn't for everyone, just hope he appreciates how lucky he is to have been one of 44 of the best surfers (competitive), in the world. Good luck just don't play the blaming game, you tried it didn't work move on. We worked hard in the past so that you new guys would have the chances be creative in a competitive format. Ask Whooley what it was like in the old 3 to the beach days.

Bruce is on a mission to surf and love it. He will only get better. Contest surfing caps your ability and you guys all look like kooks on the webcast. bruce is going to shine!!!!!!!!!! Who are all these haters???? How could you be angry with a guy who can chose his approach to his career???? This guy is the SMARTEST guy on Tour! Thank god someone has the balls like Bruce to step off the shit Tour and surf real waves because thats whats surfing is all about. I feel sorry for the guys that have to stay on the Tour. Cheers BRUCE!

Bruce is going to set a new standard in the industry. He is showing the world contest surfing isn't everything or your only option. it's the same with many other sports or professions. You could compete as a dancer in competition or perform as a dancer. I am happy to see perform. I wish other surfers would do this. Bruce will open the door for them. Bruce is making a statement. I hope the young kids will look up to him and know that contest surfing is just a path for competitive ego guys. I am stoked for Bruce. He is starting a new path for everyone. This is the best thing that has happened to surfing. He is going to save the art of surfing!

I couldn't agree more. Bruce Irons is saving the art of surfing! He is setting a new standard. This is amazing. I give Bruce mad props for having the balls to do this and know what real surfing is all about. He is going to be looked up to, well he already is. Bruce is going to keep it real.

BRUCE, GOOD MOVE AT A GOOD TIME. VOLCOM, SMART COMPANY TO SUPPORT THIS GUY. BRUCE WILL CREATE A MOVEMENT. BRUCE IS WORTHY OF A WORLDTITLE AND REGARDLESS IF HE IS ON THE TOUR OR OFF HE HAS THE IMAGE AND TITLE AS ONE OF THE BEST. I HOPE SURFING WILL REGAIN THE BEAUTY IT ONCE HAD BEFORE CONTEST MADE IT UGLY. THERE NEEDS TO BE SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN THE ASP ANYHOW. MAYBE BRUCE AND OTHERS WILL CREATE A TOUR THAT DOESNT COMPETE AND RUIN SURFINGS NATURE AND JUST PERFORM LIKE SOME EXPO SO PEOPLE CAN APPRECIATE AND SEE WHAT THEY DO BEST. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO NEW THINGS IN THE SURFING INDUSTRY! THANK YOU BRUCE IRONS FOR GETTING US ONE STEP CLOSER.

Thank god for Bruce Irons! C'mon Kelly and Andy and go out with Bruce. The tour is just a bunch of kooks besides you guys. I would rather watch y'all in videos and see you in da mags. Yea Brucey right on! Take your career by the horns! Blow it up the rest of the year like you just dont give a fuck. You might win a few. And then laterz to the WCT. Haha. i wish everyone did this. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BRUCE WAS NEVER ASP MATERIAL...ONE MUST HAVE MORE GAME THAN JUST BUILDING UP SPEED AND LOOKING FOR AN AIR SECTION TO RAMP OFF OF...IF NOT FOR ANDY, HE WOULD HAVE HALF OF THE EXPOSURE...HIS ONLY CLAIM IS BIG AIRS TO WHICH HE WAS NEVER, AND DEFINATELY NOT SO NOW, THE BEST AT...

YOU ALL NEED TO PULL YOUR HEADS IN AND WAKE UP. BRUCE DOESN'T GIVE A FCK ABOUT ASKING FOR YOUR APPROVAL. HE NEVER HAS. HE HAS BEEN A SPOILED SPONSORED SURFER SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME AND THE FACT THAT SOME PEOPLE THINK HE WILL IMPROVE OFF TOUR IS LAUGHABLE. BRUCE WAS NEVER A FIGHTER - HE NEVER HAD THE DESIRE TO WIN. HE JUST DOESN'T WANT TO TRY, AND MORESO, HE DOESN'T WANT TO LOSE WHILE TRYING. HE NEVER PUT ANYTHING ON THE LINE AND WILL NEVER JOIN THE RANKS OF HIS BROTHER, SLATER, ET AL. AND YOU FREAKS THINK BRUCE IS THE MESSIAH OF FREE SURFING?!?!? COUNT THE FCKIN' STICKERS ON HIS BOARD NEXT TIME YOU SEE A PHOTO. GOOD JOB VOLCOM, SUPPORT ANOTHER DROP OUT. HIGH FIVE!

bad decision. you surf ten contests a year. thats plenty of time to freesurf in between. this guy doesn't realize how good he has it
Posted Fri May23, 2008, 7:32 PM — By rager
I think not surfing on the Tour isn't considered a drop out. I see people think he is spoiled and never tried. I reflect and see he did a lot on tour and tried hard. And killed it several times with insane wins over Occy and Andy and Kelly getting perfect 10's in those heats. The truth is the waves aren't always on and if they aren't on Bruce isn't on. The tour isn't for everyone. Only 44 people in the entire world will ever know what it is really like. Everyone else has their personal perception on the otherside of the screen on the internet. The Tour really isn't as glamorous as it looks. There is a lot more to surfing. I think Bruce made a killer decision. Funny how people bag on him. I laugh at that. Laughing because you took the time to write something when you don't like the guy. Why waste your time and care. Seems like we got some haters that are obsessed with him! I think Volcom and Bruce rule. So do his other 8 sponsors. High five for sticking by him!

Bruce rips. He does way more than airs. He is a well rounded surfer. One of the best. I like his style. Some guys wanna watch a competitive guy with his head stuck up his ass on Tour trying to duke it out for the #1 spot thinking he is the shit... then go ahead. I would rather watch a natural talent like Bruce freesurf on a video. Alot of those guys on tour look like monkey's and I wouldn't want to see their video. Bruce on the other hand is enjoyable to watch and unpredictable. Thats what the public wants to see. Thanks Bruce for stepping outta the box!

Bruce rips, hands down he is the man. Contests are the worst and i cant believe it has taken him this long to find out. When is Dane going to drop the tour? This year? i hope so!
Posted Fri May23, 2008, 8:08 PM — By go big
I think bruce is making a good call to exit the ASP. I think we might see guys do this now on... Dane Reynolds seems to be on Bruce's page. Bruce has a lot to show the world. He won't drop out. He will just become a bigger star at what he does. He fucking won the Eddie Aikau! This guy will be around forever! He will make a comeback off the ASP Tour. I am happy for him. He should have done this a few years ago.
Posted Fri May23, 2008, 8:29 PM — By roxy girl
Bruce Irons rips like no other and contest did hold him back. He held back and tried to adapt to their format. He will be charging even bigger waves now, going even deeper, getting vertical, and punting even higher than you ever knew. The Tour held this kid back. It put him in a cage. Just think of all that frustration he has bottled up from the so called Dream Tour that is really a nightmare tour. I hope he still competes in Hawaii waves and other challenging waves. He can win big when he wants. XO

Bruce is the true soul surfer! The tour doesn't need Bruce and vice versa. I saw Bruce inducted into the hall of fame in HB and he seemed to be uncomfortable the whole time he was seated. He even missed his heat at the US open. Much respect for the man to make his decision on being free from all the decision makers. And thanks to Volcom for all the support to back him in his decision. Surf hard Bruce, finzout!

how can anybody say contests hold him back. the guy can freesurf all he wants in between events. most men who are 28 years old would never quit the world tour unless they simply didn't requalify. if he qoes through with it and quits he will be forgotten in no time and it won't be long until he is trying to get wildcards into events. many people pay money to be in softball, golf, rugby, soccer, mens baseball leagues...ect. just to have some fun competing. to be one of the best in the world at something and to walk away just because your not winning is so chicken. if you asked any of the top ten freesurfers in the world if they would like to be granted a spot on tour because they are such an amazing freesurfer they would jump at the chance. what a spoiled baby

Bruce is the most stylish creative mind surfer in the world today and goin back to freesurfing, without the restraints of judges and the contest format he'll be able to do what he loves & does best...get barreled and punt 10 ft airs...yeah BRING ON BRUCE MOVIE 2!!

I loved the article. Can't wait to see it in the mag. This will be a great move for Bruce. I have nothing but positive thoughts for Bruce. How's this guy "al" that has written in 3x trying to shit on Bruce? Hey "al" you stupid bored fuck, who ever said bruce wasn't going to continue to compete? His is still going to focus on competitions. He just won't do the 12 events on tour. He will still do Tahiti Trials, Pipeline, The backdoor Shootout, and the Eddie Aikau. He actually doesn't have much of any time in between events to freesurf when he slams 12 events a year. The kid's burnt out and wants to find the fun in surfing again but still has a mean competivie streak that he will use in about four contest a year. Give me a break with your comments and your opinion. No one cares about haters like you. Bruce and Andy just started a production company and I bet you will be watching their movies. Bruce isn't a cop out he is about to dominate by every other angle. He i

WORD! CONTEST DO HOLD PEOPLE BACK. YOU GET 30 MINUTES AND RANDOM WAVES. NO ONE SURFS ON THE SAME WAVE. IT IS ALWAYS DIFFERENT ALL DAY AND EVERY HEAT HAS A HIGH TIDE OR LOW AND SOME REALLY SLOW HEATS. IT HOLDS YOU BACK BECAUSE YOU CANNOT JUST GO OFF. YOU HAVE TO WAIT YOUR STUPID 30 MINUTES TO PRAY FOR MOTHER NATURE TO PRODUCE A WAVE. AND HOPE YOU CATCH IT AND NOT THE OTHER GUY IN THE HEAT. I DON'T KNOW OF ANY OTHER SPORT LIKE IT. TIGER WOODS AND HIS GOLF TOUR ALL GET THE EXACT SAME COURSE TO PLAY ON. SURFING IS A FUCKING GAMBLE. IT BARELY PROVES HOW GOOD YOU ARE. FREE SURFING YOU CAN TRY ANYTHING. IN A 30 MINUTE HEAT YOU HAVE TO SURF CAREFUL... BOTTOMLINE. THIS IS WHY CONTEST HOLD BRUCE BACK. GOOD JOB BRUCE, STEP DOWN AND STEP IT UP IN AN OPEN ARENA! HOLLER!

Yeah bring on Bruce Movie 2 - more of the same blah blah blah. He is yesterdays news and he knows it. Seems Taj, Parko and Fanning find it in their hectic professional schedules to make movies, do boat tours and photo shoots....

Yah Bruce will unleash havoc off tour. Not doing fulltime contest is the best thing I ever heard. Bruce doing partime contest and the other 3/4 of the year surf trips will be SICK. Now he gots da life. You know other guys like Andy and Parko want that shit but their sponsors won't support it because they are greedy and want exposure of world titles. Volcom is a sick company for supporting. Can't wait to see Bruce blow up again. He is so hype! I read in a mag he is Jordy Smiths favorite surfer right now. bruce is my favorite surfer too. He doesn't have the arrogant ego like the other dudes and just wants to have a good time and rip good waves. my idol!

I think Bruce will make the best new movies now. No need to repeat Volcoms Bruce Movie and I see all kind guys say bla blah blah to Bruce Movie 2. BUT With that production company called Irons Brothers Productions he can make his own movies. He is going to do what he wants and take advantage of good waves around the world when they just seem to be missed when you are stuck on tour. I think there is a big world out there besides tour life. I am happy Bruce will run it. two in the pink one in the stink biotches. Bruce RULES

Yea brucey! Taking control of the situation. The waves suck on tour. Go around it and get em while the waves are pumpin. you know how we do it. Go big or go home. Bruce Irons stepping up and saying how he feels. More power to him. The other half of the tour guys are just a bunch of whining bitches that would never have the balls to say it sucks. bruce fucking told the world straight. Straight like that. Good luck in the surf all of 2009. I am about to subscribe to every mag out there because I know you will be all over them!

Bruce is with a doubt one of the best surfers in the world. I feel as though Bruce got to where he is; not because of his competitive nature, something he seemingly may not possess, but raw ability. I mean watch him do a baord-burrowing hack pull it flawlessly, all while laughing his ass off, coming-out of it all shits and giggles. The guy is a legend and his surfing is inspiring and creative. Bruce looks like hes having fun when he surfs, and shit on me if thats not the best reason to surf. The man just happens to get paid really well for having alot of fun.

Bruce Irons is a legend. So are his sponsors. It takes a lot of courage to stand up for what you want and a true company like Volcom to show the world they believe in their athlete. Bruce Irons you are a hero and Volcom and others for showing the industry that there may be a change in sponsorships from believing in contest surfing and free surfing. Free surfing will preserve the beauty surfing is lacking these days. Enough with the competitive machine surfing. Let the cameras roll... Bruce Irons is loose! Yea BUDDY!!!!!!!

I say F.U to the ASP. I hope they go to shit. Heard they will not even give their top 45 athletes insurance and made them sign a waiver at Tahiti to release the ASP if they got hurt in the water. The ASP is corrupt guys!!!!!!!! They also know who they want to win! If someone like a well recognized surfer Bruce irons is stepping off that tour definently something is up besides just not being motivated to surf the crappy waves they turn the so called best in the world to compete in. Bruce take charge and grab the top 5 to follow with you. The best surfer in the world proves himself by performing not competing. blow it up brah! I seen you ripping big hanalei this year. The Tour didn't match you. You want those big waves those good waves.

Second "He actually doesn't have much of any time in between events to freesurf when he slams 12 events a year." there are 52 weeks a year each contest averages 2 weeks so has 28 weeks a year to do whatever he wants. haha. finally...the tour would be bet

As Bruce fans we should all be disappointed with this kind of bull shit. Do you all think Andy would get wet in the crouch and cry about the tour and quit if he was sucking? Andy would get pissed - surf better and win. The reason Bruce hasn't been in the Mags isn't because he sucks on tour or the tour takes up to much of his time. It is because he is no longer at the top of his game. He has become flat out lazy and others have past him. I was in Tavarua when the Volcom team was there and Bruce wouldn't come out of his burner smoke filled fale to surf 4-6 cloudbreak. Bruce is giving us all the biggest load of cry baby-whiney-bad attitude-BS he can drum up. Everyone who thinks this guy is the best freesufer out there hasn't been following surfing the past 3 yrs. Bruce admits he can't pull off what Dane can and there are a 1/2 dozen rippers who have pasted Bruce in the last 3 yrs, some on the CT. He is giving up and will fade away. If u think he is doing what is best 4 surfing u do
Posted Sat May24, 2008, 3:26 AM — By tavarua???
Wait... I was staying in the same room as him on the Volcom trip to Tavarua. Who are you? How could you say his room was burner smoke filled? Bruce doesn't even smoke. What an idiot you are. Oh my god! Shows how much you know. Anything you can try and make up to make him sound like a guy who would give up and fade away. No one but Volcom was on that trip. You sure weren't. LOSER.

Bruce is a cool dude. He is a great surfer regardless what approach he takes. I enjoy watching him freesurf and compete. I like that he decided to finally admit he was leaving the CT. I know he didn't want to be on Tour after year 2. He said he wanted to quit last year. All of us have always known it. He isn't a cry baby at all. He doesn't smoke for the record too because I see pathetic online kooks claiming he is stoned. What Bruce is doing is what half of us on tour want to do. But we cannot because our sponsors dont back it. Bruce is envied. Bruce is lucky. He gets psyched for good waves and the WCT cannot guarentee the good waves... he wants them then he will find them off tour. The fans that are upset that he won't compete dont have to worry. He isnt dissapearing. He wants to take a different approach and I know the fans will love it. See you in Tavarua buddy. Contest in ON tomorrow!

No matter what there are always critics. Many who don't know the truth. If you know Bruce you know he ain't a weed smoker. haha. Funny shit these internet guys say. Bruce isn't a has-been fade away guy either. You will just have to watch how progressive he will free surf. And what he is going to do off Tour. You will have to see how well he will do in the surf events he wants to attend next year when he balances out his time with more surf trips. He wants a challenging wave to surf. He wants to go big and is fearless. The WCT didnt deliver and he got bored and frusterated on Tour with 12 events. Wait it was more than that. He did the WQS Sunset and Haleiwa too each year so that is 14 events. And the Backdoor shoot out and the eddie when it is held. so thats 16 events. Plus he often did the Huntington contest. Thats 17 events. Maybe the other guy that wrote in could re-do his 28 weeks off claim. Bruce had like 12 weeks off. Mostly spent jet lagged at home or doing sponsorship promos and photoshoo

Bruce is a fearless surfer that would go out on days no one on the WCT would dare to. They would all bethe cry babies with wet pants. Bruce will charge. Bruce isn't as driven as Andy to compete tho. Andy lives off of beating people. He is an angry agressive guy. Bruce is different and mellow. Andy never took Bruce's back on Tour. He just did his own thing and treated him like another competitor. Maybe if Andy showed him the ropes he would have been right there giving Kelly a run for his $. But with Bruce off Tour I think he will shine. He got stuck in a rut and wanted free. I bet he nails some contest now that he got that off his chest to the public. Bruce is a legend.

Bruce Irons is Bruce Irons. That is why we like him. He doesn't try to be someone he isn't. He does what he wants when he wants how he wants and is always unpredictable. It is what the crowds want. I like how his career changes and takes new paths. It keeps him interesting. It was all about Kelly and Andy for so many years and it got so boring. It was all the mags would cover. To be able to see Mick win the title was refreshing. To see Bruce jump off the WCT no matter how he is rated at the end of this year is refreshing. Surfing is becoming interesting again. Bruce is a hero in my eyes. I think he is looked up to by many many many people. He will continue to push the limits in surfing. Anyone who thinks he would fade away is retarded. ALL in for Bruce to make the FINAL in Fiji!

BRUCE IRONS IS BRAVE TO DO THIS. IT IS TRUE IF YOU AREN'T WORLD NUMBER 1 THEN WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WORLD NUMBER 2 IS BARELY REMEMBERED FOR HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND EVERYONE ELSE IN THAT SO CALLED CATTLE BUS IS A BLURR. IF YOU CANNOT FIND HAPPINESS IN A FULL YEAR CIRCUIT OF CONTEST I DON'T BLAME YOU. I WANT TO SEE BRUCE IN MORE MOVIES AND MAGAZINE ARTICLES. KEEP IT FRESH. COVER THE ASP BUT COVER THE GUYS WHO REALLY SURF AND CHARGE. CONTEST SURFING IS SUCH A MECHANICAL STYLE. THE FLUID STYLE COMES OUT IN FREE SURFING AND THATS WHERE I GET PLEASURE WATCHING. I THINK DANE SHOULD JOIN BRUCE. AND KELLY. I THINK THOSE GUYS ARE THE ONLY 3 ON TOUR WITH THE SAME ATTITUDE AND FRAME OF MIND. I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE HYPE IS OFF THE WCT. I WANT TO SEE SURFING WITH OUT BOUNDARIES. THANKS BRUCE FOR SHOWING EVERYONE YOU CAN DO IT. I AM PROUD OF YOU.

Bruce Irons is good at whatever he does. I wanted him to beat all those guys on Tour and dominate but if he wasn't happy he wasn't happy. He did just get 5th place at Teahupoo and still wasn't happy. I would be tired of it too if I was never home and missing every swell because of the Tour schedule. I say it's a good move and good for surfing and good for fans. All we will do is get to see more of Bruce now. He is hungry for perfect waves and wants to tear them to shreds. The Tour couldnt dish out the waves but a fraction of the year and now he says well I will go find them myself. I like it. I cannot wait to watch what he does in the years to come. He will be more focused and not spun out from the Tour. He is one motivated mutha F@%*ER. He is only lazy when the waves are. He is a true surfer that craves waves not points like the other Top 44. I am glad he can tell us the truth. I like him even more! XX

Bruce are you for real? Is this for real? Your website says nothing like this! I am stoked you are doing this. You are a free spirit and a real free surfer. You seem your happiest on surf trips and grumpy at contest unless it is big big waves that are epic. I understand your point in the interview. You want to surf waves that are good and have no motivation to grovel. I like that you can claim that. So many other guys have too big of egos. I am glad you will follow your heart and dreams. You have done a lot for surfing. I am glad all your sponsors backed you. You have like 10! Rumor has it you get more coin than Andy. Even Kelly too!? Shows the world that not only world titles on a Tour mean you are worth something. You can be even more successful if you follow your talent in the direction it pulls you. Your image is so radical and priceless because you do crazy shit in the water and NOW out of the water by standing up and saying I am stepping off that Tour. I love it. You are priceless!

I have always liked Bruce Irons and like him even more now. it makes me want to follow his story. I hope everything he does all of 2009 off Tour is documented. Bruce is a surfer who wants to surf the best waves and we want to watch it. Thank you Volcom and RedBull and Oakley and .... wait haha I have to look at a picture of his board... oh and DC and Body Glove and Nixon and Dakine for giving this guy the wings to follow his desires. There is a big need for this movement. Contest surfing is getting boring and dissapointing.

Big Bruce fan and even bigger Bruce fan NOW! This is GREAT! I like that Bruce is fearless in the ocean and fearless to say how he feels. I wish they could make a Bruce Tour that was only held in epic waves. Setting a new standard. the worlds best should only compete in the worlds best conditions. Bruce knows whats up. Bruno Santos is the Tahiti Teahupoo champion because the conditions were shit that last day of the event. The contest world is a trip. Lets make the Bruce Tour!

The waves are said to be epic for day 1 of the Fiji contest. Bruce must be happy to know this and maybe we will see a more eager and motivated Bruce in this event. this is all bruce wants and look what mother nature is givin him now. its like he said what he wanted and now the earth is answering back. I HOPE BRUCE WINS IT! He deserves to! No cares in the world just you surfing how you want to. Now you told the world you don't care about the WCT so now you can charge with no worries! This is going to be a good event. Go Bruce GO!

Bruce is too good of a surfer to not compete at the highest level of competition on the 'ct. We have seen the videos of him ripping, the shots in the mag, posters on the wall...we all got those. And what will be the difference between the posters of him at age 20 or 30, its not like his surfing has changed since then...maybe the partying has caught up to him a bit... I think it is sad bruce does not want to make the sacrifices necessary to win a title...i have never doubted the ability just the motivation. dig deep bruce and you will win events-smoke em in fiji and your last year on tour please...

Bruce Irons IS too good of a surfer to not compete. I hope he continues to compete at the places he likes. If he isn't happy going to Brazil or places like that then who cares. I want to see him on a challenging wave. I heard him say he would do Tahiti Trials and other events. Thats what the fans want to see. I am a huge Bruce fan and that's what I want. Bruce is a cool guy and I have hung out with him before. It's stupid people write in and say he parties too much and that's what led to him not winning a world title . Just remember it is his Brother Andy who parties and is in and out of rehab and still winning worldtitles. Bruce has always focused and never had any drug or alcohol issues. Get your info straight people. C'mon! The guy's an athlete that wants to surf worldclass waves on or off the Tour. If the Tour had a different format to guarentee it would deliver perfect worldclass waves at all times I bet he would stay. I support Bruce in his adventure to surf waves. Thank god for

Eh bra we all know the best surfer is da one thats goes. Bruce would go! Eddie would go! You is why the kids and fans look up to you. I think that the tour does not say really how good you are. Why should all everyone think contest is the only way. Bruce go get the waves you want kid because THAT IS WHAT MOTIVATES YOU. I would be one lazy motha fuckah too if some made me travel all year and surf 80% slop. Off tour more betta. But I better still see you in every Pipeline contest! You know that! Follow your dreams. Bruce on or off the tour is fine with me. I am happy people make changes if they aren't happy. If he wants to find what makes him happy and be happy with his surfing then buh bye WCT. We all will get to see more of him now. He will go on way more surf trips and have a load of new videos for us all. Why doesn't all the mean commenters simmer down and realize Bruce is going to blow up off tour and we are all just jealous as fuck because every single one of his 10 sponsors told him to do it and he will be paid the same. He would have never done this with out their approval. I think he is smart to take a dif approach. Half the guys on tour suck and to have bottom feeder in the rated 30-44 range beat you in a humiliating 2 foot shit wave it sucks. The Tour showed us all last year it isn't what they try hype it to be. The waves are junk half the time and guys like bede durbidge Adriano De Souza, Adrian Buchan, and Kai Otton are rated top 10. Now that is stupid. Those guys aren't top 10 quality. Bru

Bruce Irons you better keep that goal of doing a few a Trials here and there. We want to see you beat all the unworthy faggots in the events that are making it thru. I am stoked you want to find the best waves and make your schedule based on the storms. That is a true hardcore surfer. We just want to see you beat the kooks on tour and also rip waves off tour. Can't wait. Good luck in Tavarua this weekend! XO Honey Girl

With change comes innovation. With innovation comes inspiration. With inspiration comes BRUCE Irons. Do what feels right Bruce. Don't let anyone else dictate your path or career. I am pretty confident reading the teaser article that you know what you want and will do it. Lives too short to be stuck on a year long circuit if you aren't happy. I am ready for some new movies of you and Magazine articles and covers. Shiznit to get people psyched up! Everyone knows you make their shit sell and popular. You got 10 hella smart sponsors. You guys just backed the most exciting surfer to regain his excitement. I sure am excited. GO BRUCE! FINALS IN FIJI- take them all out and surf like you could give a shiznit what the judges think. Thats what we want to see. someone not conforming. the tour is boring. the dane and jordy hype was fun while it lasted. Then Dane smoked Jordy. Same old shit. Bruce DO SOMETHING! DO SOMETHING NO ONE ELSE WOULD EVER DO!

BRUCE CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS. CALL HIM SPOILED TO HAVE AN OFFER GIVEN TO HIM BY HIS SPONSORS AND TAKE THEM UP ON IT TO STEP OFF TOUR. BUT ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD. IF BRUCE WILL DELIVER US MORE ACTION OFF TOUR THAN THATS WHAT FANS OF BRUCE WANT. I WANT TO SEE HIM SMOKE GUYS IN THE LAST EVENTS AND GO OUT RATED HIGHER THAN HE EVER WAS THE ENTIRE TIME HE SPENT ON THE WCT. AND STILL LEAVE THE TOUR BECAUSE HE IS ONE BADASS MOTHER FUCKER. ALOHA TO ALL THE BRUCE SUPPORT!

His humility seems very sincere and his time now to step back and do what he wants is refreshing. I liked hearing his perspective on doing rodeo flips and other tricks and his respect for others that can pull off certain moves. I don't like hearing people put negative stuff on this board. I'm sure your either jealous or insecure if you come off a certain way. I hope Bruce the best in life. We go through this once and if you are not happy with where you are at, make the changes...Bruce is a good example of believing in what is right for himself beyond the pressures of "what everyone wants him to do." Good luck from NC Bruce.

Bruce will never do what everyone wants him to do. He will do what makes him feel good. Just like anyone else in this world that has a mind of their own. I think Bruce has a lot more to show the world and his surfing is not out shined by the young up and comers. He has made a stamp in the industry and will follow his dream becuase he is a legend. I am happy to know he will open the doors and world up for a little bit of diversity in the surf industry. We want to watch the contest but we want to see more of the guys being REAL. Bruce Irons from my standpoint is REAL. I like that about him. He is humble too. You see guys on Tour claiming it on waves they get 8's on and not once has I ever seen Bruce even claim his 9's or 10's. He is a classy surfer with sick style. If I could be any surfer in the world it would be him.

Bruce is a spoiled brat who couldn't cut it in the world of competition. His heat surfing is terribly uninspiring. His attitude is that he is for some reason entitled to a free pass to the podium. Pathetic. Here's hoping this is the start of a short road to obscurity. Well done, Bruce.

Bruce is just a dimwit surfer. Listen to the guy talk, he couldn't hold down a job as a bus boy. It must be hard to swallow being a mediocre guy on the WCT after years of people telling him that he would own the tour if he was on it. He will be remembered as a dreamer that quit. He dreamed of matching the success of his brother, but didn't want it as bad as Andy. Andy is a warrior, Bruce has no character. He is a poor role model for anybody. Don't be like this guy with a deplorable attitude. HE has no work ethic, education or morals. He is a dick and has bad karma that is catching up to him quickly. Congratulations on being good at playing in the ocean and partying.

I agree with SteveA, who are we to judge a man and HIS decisions, let alone criticize him for them. I assume everyone posting is a fan of the sport, let us not degrade the sport we love by bashing one of its greatest ambassadors. On a lighter note; Cat Williams would be proud Bruce, cause you clearly have an A-grade pimp game with all these haters. (See: The Pimp Chronicles, by Cat Williams) That is, if the last part went right over ya head. One Love.

I have to admit i agree with some other comments about bruce just not cutting it on tour. excellence has to become a habit and that just flat out takes a lot of work and dedication - you got to want it and bruce is so talented that things just come easy - he just doesnt want to work that hard - i appreciate his honesty because he is admitting that in this article. hands down one of the greatest surfers in the world no matter what. he is one of my favorites for sure!

GOOD FOR BRUCE!! hes one of the best freesurfers on the planet, so he should freesurf. the tour is not for him, but that doesnt mean he is not a great surfer. to all you donkeys that say he has no drive and all he wants to do is drink beer? well fuck that and you. but hey, i guess we're all legends in our own minds.

What can you say, every one calls their own shots and Irons is doing just that. One hell of a contest and free surfer. I had the chance to witness his free and contest surfing for the last couple of years. The guys amazing. Good parents, good kids, and you're doing what you want to do... Can't blame that, besides, we're all a bunch of restless souls, some of us just get paid a little more! Enjoy life!!!

Party boy is in it for the good times, can't compete, and finds himself a nobody in the ratings - so NOW he thinks he should deserve to take off on funded surf trips to get his mug filmed. Real reason: cuz it requires less comittment that way. Who CARES?!? Go away.

Competition makes sports grow but it's just a bunch of guys showing who has the biggest dick! Surf is soul, religion, lifestyle... Good luck Bruce! Your free!

Who really cares. Volcom should drop him. He can be like Sunny Garcia and surf for Rockstar Energy drink

BRUCE CAN DO IT ALL..... HE CAN WIN THE WORLD TITLE... HE JUST HAS TO GO OFF TOUR TO THINK IN PEACE AND MAKE GOOD DECISIONS THEN THE WORLD WILL SEE A NEW WORLD CHAMP....

Gabafornkuinchiskyvic and jake can suck a dick. dont be mad that he is ever contest! if you are so butt hurt that the gay ass over aggressive Brazilians aren't getting any exposure then start your own magazine and showcase them yourself. no body wants to see half ass surfers doing 10 snappy ass hits to the beach in a mag or in real life. thats why most contests are flawed. If he has sponsors to back him up with a dope decision like this one then more power to him and i will support him by buying the next video that volcom comes out with.

Bruce shows no signs of doing anything productive with his "off-tour" status a'la Dave Rastovich. Bruce is a marketing tool coddled by Volcom to sell product. which is why they are so supportive of his move, they are afraid to push him to challenge himself in the competitive or non-competitive environment. if your #1 sponsor bought the Lopez/Fletcher house overlooking Pipe for you why even consider doing anything but be selfish? which is exactly what this move by Bruce is. I will agree that he is a fantastic surfer with heaps of talent but so far his actions out of the water show him to be very immature and a complete ego-centered individual. pretty funny to see the sheep that are so psyched to see more videos and ads and "advertorial articles" in the magazines. Bruce is a great example of what's wrong with surf-industry sponsorships in general these days. poster-child for spolied brat pro surfers that have nothing to offer, they are as bad as Hollywood celebrities..oh wait they AR

Bullshits, every Pro surfer in this world dream with the tour, but the Irons Brothers kill for party, Andy partying and competing was three time world champ. Imagine his results with a real Pro behavior and not looking like a mom rich child. Here in Argentina for win, first you must to be a man. Life is too easy for you, and you are wasting it. Brucey go home and please stay there for ever. In the opposite diameter of the wheel there is a guy from Cocoa Beach. You hear about him?

Bruce, you're one dude I wish I could be for a day. Honestly. You're being true to yourself, and that's all that matters. You're also in a position where you can free surf, Volcom is cool with it, so freakin' why not? You're still one of the best surfers. Maybe you're not "going to win a world title", but obvioulsy you know you can. Like you said, this is what you were meant to do, and you're in touch with that. so many people aren't. I can relate to what you say & doing. It's your life, and bottom line is people envy it and draw inpsiration from it. Heck, I do. I'd do it too if I was in your shoes. Love to meet you one day too; not to hassel you, but just to say "Ride on, brotha." Wish I could join ya in your adventure. Uhh, Volcom ??? .... LOL

Bruce rips that's for sure. Contests can burn a guy out, so congratulations on your decision bro. Free surfing is the way to go. Enjoy the ride, cuz it's only one time around. Too much emphasis has been placed on competition. Pure surfing is way cool. Too many people think that guys on the tour are the best of the best, but really they are the best of those who compete. The legends can all still rip but woke up a long time ago and decided to do their own thing. Surfing because we love it is where it's at. Keep Rockin bro. Stay deep.
