A Jersey For Jersey

Slater signs and sends Quik Pro singlet to raise funds for Dean Randazzo

Winning comps. Teaching Hollywood starlets to surf. Fighting off supermodels with a chair and bullwhip. Kelly Slater’s a busy man. But when he heard that New Jersey surfing godfather Dean Randazzo was battling cancer for the fourth time, he knew he had to take time to help. So, after winning the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper, he grabbed contest jersey out of the box, signed it with fellow-finalist Mick Fanning, and shipped it back to the Garden State to auction online and raise for funds for Randazzo’s recovery.

“Dean’s a friend,” the eight-time champ emailed from Oz. “He’s a guy who everyone loves, who rips and who’s having a huge struggle. He needs some support from us.”

That means all of us.So here’s three ways you can do your part:

1. Do it for Dean. This New York/New Jersey photo contest is raising cash one yellow rashguard at a time in a battle to see who can get a shot charging the biggest wave. Now it’s gone international and extended to the middle of April. Sam Hammer took his to Hawaii. Brad Gerlach’s got one, too. Get yours, go big, and Do it for Dean. (Go to NYNJSurf.com for details.)

2. Go golfing. On May 10, at Mays Landing in New Jersey, The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation runs its annual Golf For a Cause tournament. There’s hotdogs. Beer. Dinner. Awards. A photo of every foursome. Even a gift bag. Just $100 a person and it all goes to help people battling cancer. If you can’t attend, sponsor it. Call 609-653-2917 for info.

3. Go E-Bay. The signed Quik Pro rashguard is LIVE NOW. So whether you’re a supermodel, a starlet, or just a rabid surfing fan, here’s your chance to get a piece of two world champs and do it for charity. And there couldn’t be a better time.

“Dean is about to start the stem cell transplant this month,” notes good friend and contest organizer Nick Bricker. “But he’s in great spirits and the fundraising is way more than we expected. The surf industry’s been highly supportive. Billabong alone donated boards from Andy Irons, Joel Parkinson and Occy. Between the contests, the Wrightsville fundraiser and other little events, we have generated over $30,000. We’re all unbelievably appreciative.”

So are we, Dean.
