Jay’s recovering from a recent injury, but still thinking about nailing the $50,000 so he can throw a massive party...and get a home loan. SURFING: WHERE DID YOU BUST OUT THAT BIG ALLEY-OOP? SOMEWHERE IN INDO?
JAY DAVIES: Yeah, it was in the Mentawai Islands at a spot called Bank Vaults.
WAS IT A PRETTY GOOD WAVE FOR LAUNCHING?
Uummm, it’s not really that great of a wave for it. It just went through a little bit of a tide change or something and had a couple of little ramps on the end bowl. It wasn’t too bad; we got a couple of little sections that popped up. It was while we were filming for the new Rusty movie Changes.
DID IT PUSH YOUR SURFING MORE KNOWING THAT KERRZY AND THE OTHER RUSTY GUYS WERE OUT THERE TRYING TO BOOST TOO?
Oh definitely. Kerrzy and Jamie O and Sharpey and everyone else were out there, so it always makes you go a bit harder when those guys are out there.
DID YOU STICK ANY OTHER BIG AIRS FROM THAT SESSION?
I did another little air reverse but it was definitely the alley-oop that felt the best.
WAS IT THE BIGGEST ALLEY-OOP YOU’VE EVER DONE?
WE’RE TALKING NON-TOW OF COURSE.
Non-towed... Yeah, for sure. I did another big one not long ago at Rabbits (Jay’s local wedging beachy) but it was tow-assisted so you can’t really compare that one.
WHAT DO YOU RECKON IS THE BIGGEST AIR YOU’VE STUCK IN YOUR LIFE?
It was not long ago at Rabbits, the same day as the tow-assisted alley-oop. I was just towing all day with Dino Adrian and had a hell day then we beached the ski, ran up the beach to my house, got a feed and started towing again. We got some good air sections and landed some good airs so we’re pretty stoked about that day.
ARE YOU GOING TO BE TRYING SOME MORE BIG BOOSTS TO CLAIM THE $50,000?
Definitely. It’s one of my main goals for this (southern hemisphere) summer for sure. But I jumped off my balcony on New Year’s Day and busted my ankle and haven’t been able to surf for two weeks, so that’s a bit of a bummer, but that’s what you get for getting on the piss and being a maniac.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH THE $50,000 IF YOU WON? IT’S MORE THAN $70,000 AUSSIE THESE DAYS.
If I won, I’d have a fucken’ hell, hell time on the piss first. Then I’d pull myself up and try to invest in something worthy for the long run, I think. I’d throw it straight down on a home loan and then I’d be done for good, I think. Buy a house down here somewhere and be set up.
