Photo Editor's Corner

After getting another batch of quality-challenged photos, SURFING Photo Editor Peter Taras fingers the culprit

I hate Canon. So much in fact that from time to time I write their help desk and just spat "f--k you, f--k you, I hope you guys rot in hell." And I’m generally a happy guy.

This company is f--ked, and for anyone who owns a MarkIII series 1 or 2 you feel my pain. You understand that this camera does not auto-focus. This camera body alone has cost me and our magazine thousands of dollars this year. The "error 99's" when the temperature gets below 50 degrees are great to deal with, too!

How many times have they recalled this shitty camera body? I know of four recalls for the same problem which is the mirror misalignment. And it gets worse. They give you a link to where you need to send your shitty cameras back to. The funny thing is, the link they give you is broken! That's right. The link that give you to get help for your broken camera is broken.

Canon, you are the worst. Your over-priced, piece-of-shit cameras are a joke. I hope someone someday makes you truly accountable for all the priceless images you’ve ruined.

Sincerely,
Peter Taras

I want a side of "sour"crought actually SUPhater. I get Russo's first Nikon submission this week so I'll let you guys know how his D700 and D3x images look. They should be amazing. Just a little bit of insider info, our Feb-08 cover was shot with a Nikon D300. The image was shot at ISO 200 and was really underexposed and dark. The way the grain held together through all the color correction was remarkable. Nikon really wants to become the leader of the surf photography. Im actually working on a way for surf photographers to get discounts with them. I'm not telling anyone to sell all their Canon stuff and jump ship. Who could afford to do that???? But you might be able to sell your used gear for an even swap for those of you that are disgruntled.

I hear your pain Pete - i've stuck with the MkIIN which is a gem and won't dare touch a MkIII. Will not switch to Nikon as I believe it's a bit premature to do so... but hope Canon will finally get their shit together!!! Can't complain about Canon's prices, Nikon user's will tell you likewise!!! Sounds like you won't accept anything but images shot on a Nikon from now on though!!! hehe

Ryder, we except everything! Don't let my emotional rant steer you away from submitting to us.

I'm a Nikon shooter since 1975, and although I refuse to bash Canon's, I have a few fellow shooters with Canno MarkIII's that have had issues and are seriously looking at the Nikon D300, the D700 and the D3's as their next purchases. I feel for both of them, since they have "significant investments" in Canon glass, but they are complaining that they are losing money by missing shots. I just keep telling them to "Come to the Dark Side" and they will be forever happy!! I will admit that Nikon fell asleep for a few years there and Canon made huge leaps and bounds in the sports photography market, but I do believe that with the introduciton of the D300, the D700 and the D3, Nikon is now back on top of their game and is the top sports photography body today!

Just riding out the storm with my Canon 30d. When you're surrounded by water and sharks, with no land in sight you just have to stay in the life raft. Hurry Canon...this raft is ready to sink!
