The Waves I'd most like to see protected would have to be the waves of my childhood. The beaches of Leblon and Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro. Polution and corruption in government have made the blue waves of Rio look more like green slush than salt water. It would be great to see if Brazil does make it as the leader of the developing world, to make the south beaches of Rio a historic landmark and therefore fully protected.

Dead Man's is local point break inside the San Francisco Bay that has one of the best waves in Northern California. When there is enough swell, it's a fast moving and racy and can peal a few hundred yards. It only breaks a few times a year and it takes a long while to paddle out to, but when it’s firing, this wave is better than any spot from here to Santa Cruz. We normally don’t think of surf breaks as treasures of a city, but this spot is a hidden gem. Hopefully it will keep breaking in SF for many years.

My favorite wave is at the mouth of Bolinas Lagoon during a south swell. Pleasant long rides in a beautiful setting.

A wave that needs to be saved is Punta Banco, next to Pavones in Costa Rica. There are plans for experimental yellowfin tuna farms along the coast down to Punta Burica, that will affect the coastal ecosystem of all of the Golfo Dulce. Find out more at www.pretomar.org and www.crsurf.com.
